Amazing cross-sections, but a rehash with added material
By Parka
[[VIDEOID:mo2SAWOXR7DCUCN]]There have been quite a few books released on Star Wars vehicles already, namely:

Incredible Cross-sections of Star Wars Episode I
Incredible Cross-sections of Star Wars Episode II
Incredible Cross-sections of Star Wars Episode III
Incredible Cross-sections of Star Wars Episode IV, V & VI
Star Wars Complete Cross-Sections: The Spacecraft and Vehicles of the Entire Star Wars Saga

Now, we have another new book, with most of the content rehashed though.

Compared to the previous compilation the Star Wars Complete Cross-sections which is 152 pages, also from DK, this hardcover is 208 pages. The extra pages come in the form of related film stills and commentary. Some film stills and additional commentary are also added to the cross-section pages.

The expanded edition comes with 4 new cross sections: Luke Skywalker's Landspeeder, the Medical Frigate, Home One and the Scout Speeder Bike.

The book itself is smaller in size to the first few books. It's not much an issue because the details can still be seen but you lose the effect of viewing those amazing artworks at even larger sizes.

The illustrations from Hans Jenssen and Richard Chasemore are amazingly detailed. It's quite a feat to imagine all those engines and wires running beneath the spaceships and whatever vehicles or walkers. When I look at Star Wars vehicles, part of me think of them as movie props, but these guys really make everything look so believable.

Even if you already have the Complete Cross-Sections, I think as a fanatic Star Wars fan, you would probably want to get this book just because of those four new cross-sections. I know that I-can't-help-myself-I-have-to-have-everything feeling when it comes to collecting.

5 stars if you're seeing the content for the first time.
3 stars if you already have the previous compilation book.

(There are more pictures of the book on my blog. Just visit my Amazon profile for the link.)

Excellent book if you are like me and weren't able to ever purchase ALl of the Star Wars crossection books.
The size of all of artwork in this book is a little smaller than the size in the original DK books, but is still large enough to still marvel at all of the details in these intricately drawn, technical illustrations.
It's a plus to have all of these crossection illustrations under one complied reference style book.
Highly recommend even if you have the larger version illustration books.

Updated Review.
I have, recently, purchased the older 2007 version of this book to do a comparison.

I decided to update my previous review of this recent version of this book to both dispel the idea of this 2013 version of this book being a "money grab" by DK and just a, so called, smaller formatted, rehashed version of the previous 2007 larger formatted version.

First, and most important to note is that while the overall page size has changed only in height, the width of the 2013 version of this book is near identical to the 2007 version of the Star Wars Vehicle Cross-sections reference book.
I did a book over book comparison of almost every page and layout of each page.
The actual size/scale of the actual cross-section artworks have not been reduced so significantly from the 2007 version to be jarringly noticeable. They reworked some of the overall page formhat and item callouts to accomdate the shorter height of the book. The difference in scale is NOT enough to take away from seeing all of fine details of these drawings.
In some instances, some of the vehicle cross-sections have gotten a larger scale.
Obviously and noticeably, larger drawing of General Grievous's speeder/interceptor, enlarge views of the various components of AT-AT walker cockpit, larger drawing of AT-RT walker, larger drawings of the Republic interceptor's circular Booster rocket module, larger drawing of the TIE interceptor and a much larger scale of the snow speeder, which is one of my favorite Star Wars flying vehicles.
The only cross-section drawing that I noticed a jarring difference in scale is the Juggernaut land vehicle.
In the 2007 book, this is an impressive sized and scaled drawing. In the 2013 version, for some inexplicable reason, this vehicle is the only one that stood out that has been drastically reduced in scale in relation to the overall page size and the drawing image no longer "commands" the space on the page that the 2007 version did. Strange decision there.
You still get the same trI-fold/triptic pages of the much larger and detailed Star Wars vehicles from the 2007 book version. Again, at a slightly smaller, but nevertheless, still impressive scale.
Plus, you get 4 new cross-sections. Luke's speeder, the speeder bike, Home One and the Medical Frigate. All just as impressively detailed.
These weren't just sloppily added as an afterthought.
They are done just as well as all of the previously drawn cross-sections and the details on these new cross-section drawing are, again, impressively executed.
This book is NOT a money grab by DK as some suggest and if you do not have a complete set of the larger, previously published DK Star Wars cross-sectional reference books, then I still, solidly, recommend this recent 2013 offering as the version to purchase and add to your Star Wars reference book collection.

Good If You Don't Already Own "Complete Cross-Sections"
By Daryl Carpenter
What would any good Star Wars product be without a shiny new Special Edition every few years? I haven't considered myself a Star Wars fan in a long time, but I love the Incredible Cross-Sections books. I've spent hundreds of hours poring over them, laying out the floor plans and systems in my head, often just marveling at Richard Chasemore's and Hans Jenssen's attention to detail. I bought "Star Wars: Complete Cross-Sections" for convenience sake, and for the four new cutaways and the making-of material.

"Complete Vehicles" incorporates all of the material from CCS and adds four new two-page cutaways - Luke's Landspeeder, the Medical Frigate, Home One, and the Imperial Speeder Bike. Along with the four new illustrations, each cut-away is accompanied by a number of screenshots from the movies. Some of the more iconic vehicles also receive an additional two-page spread with additional photographs and a couple paragraphs of information.

The new format is obviously more kid-friendly than the original ICS books (which were already written for 9-12 crowd) but the smaller format hurts the impact of many of the cut-aways. The pages are two inches shorter than they were in CCS, and many of the cut-aways have been shrunk to fit the busier format. Oddly enough, "side" cut-aways that were smaller in the original books, like the Tantive IV escape pod and the AT-RT, are bigger this time around and receive their own page.

If you already own "Complete Cross-Sections" you don't really need to buy "Complete Vehicles," unless you're a die-hard fan who HAS to have the four new cross-sections. The frequently awe-inspiring level of detail in the cut-aways, and the charmingly simple format which allowed the reader to focus on the illustrations, seem kind of lost in this shinier and more compact triple-dip.

Oh well. At least we still have the originals.

SNAP!BOMP!BEEDLE-DI-BOP!In this toe-tapping jazz tribute, the traditional "This Old Man" gets a swinging makeover, and some of the era's best musicians take center stage. The tuneful text and vibrant illustrations bop, slide, and shimmy across the page as Satchmo plays one, Bojangles plays two . . . right on down the line to Charles Mingus, who plays nine, plucking strings that sound "divine."

From School Library Journal
Grade 1-5–Using a lively version of the children's song This Old Man, this book introduces famous African-American jazz musicians as it counts to nine. Louis Armstrong is number 1. This jazz man, he plays one,/He plays rhythm with his thumb,/With a Snap! Snap! Snazzy-snap!/Give the man a hand,/This jazz man scats with the band. The illustrations give clues to the performers, and the end matter has a biographical sketch for each one. In the final spread, all of the musicians are together, taking bows: These jazz men make one great band! The energetic collage illustrations introduce the action by picturing bold striped curtains encompassing an empty stage set up with jazz instruments; each performer's subsequent spread has striped borders. Onomatopoeic words spill across the pages in imitation of the music's sounds. The book is fun for jazz aficionados and neophytes alike. Children will enjoy the sounds and illustrations and sing along without needing to know more.–Judith Constantinides, formerly at East Baton Rouge Parish Main Library, LA

From Booklist
Ehrhardt moves the traditional counting chant "This Old Man" to the jazz club in this infectious, rhythmic offering. Each page features a different jazz musician who plays "rhythm with his thumb," makes "music with his shoes," and so on. The rhyming text scans with a smooth, toe-tapping tempo that's nicely extended by the colorful, mixed-media images, arranged in compositions that have their own staccato beat. Bars of striped color slide across page edges, and stylized African American musicians, rendered in geometric shapes and textured prints, send up "notes that rise to heaven." Children will want to shout along with the scat-cat rhythms ("Beedle-di-Bop! Bebop!") that replace the original chant's "paddy-whack" refrain and are printed in colorful letters that punctuate the artwork. This will appeal most to preschoolers and kindergarteners, but older children will appreciate the closing section, which reveals that the featured musicians represent real-life jazz legends, including Charles Mingus and Charlie Parker. A short biography of each is appended. A welcome introduction to the world of jazz. Gillian Engberg

This Great Book! (More and More Honors!)
By M. Allen Greenbaum
Update, 2010.

Live on Stage: The Sounds of "This Jazz Man"

Finally! "This Jazz Man" will be released very soon on CD and cassette, and I'm lucky enough to have an advance copy from the publisher. Although author Ehrhardt and illustrator Roth painted a superb word-picture combo, the SOUND of those illustrious 10 Jazz men was absent from the mix. The audio version solves that creatively, not only with a superb --jazzy even--reading of the text by James "D Train" Williams (his enthusiastic but controlled narrative brims with the personalities of the musicians and their music), but with examples of the music by a very talented septet! You can hear the splash bomb drumming of Art Blakey, the lush grandeur of Duke Ellington, the boppish output of Mingus, Charlie "Bird" Parker, and Dizzy. These samplings, long enough to give one a real feeling for the style and sound, alternate with Williams' narration, and the sound effects (the hushed introduction of a mythical nightclub that helps identify the musician), the thunderous and very life-sounding applause) both mesh with and intensify the excitement of the book: You really feel like you're there!

The book/CD combination is as fine an example of immersion education as you'll hear, see, and especially feel. Like the book, the CD can be enjoyed at several levels of musical knowledge and cognitive development. Toddlers will enjoy the jazzy text and bright pictures (as well as learning the numbers from one to ten) accompanied by the synchronized CD (there is a brief page-turning sound to cue the parent, teacher, or designated student page-flipper to turn the page). Older elementary school kids can enjoy the same experience, or can listen to a second track that excludes the page-turn cue. Moreover, there is a third track with more information about jazz and the featured musicians. This is a rare opportunity to teach your child or your classroom that music is a living thing of beauty, color, and joy; a swinging endeavor that evolves with both artist and audience.

Note: Since writing the review below, I've discovered that "This Jazz Man" has received three (and counting) prestigious honors in the last month or so: A Nick Jr. Book of the Year for Children, one of the N.Y. Public Libraries Top 100 books to Read to Kids, and one of a very few named by National Public Radio as a best children's book of the year!

February 2007 Update: This Jazz Man is on the cover of the February "Crickets" magazine! In addition, it was shortlisted as a top book by the Cooperative Children's Book Center, and is being used as a teaching tool for a Smithsonian Museum (yes, that Smithsonian!) exhibit.

If you've bought this book, you and I share a certain nose for kids' books; if you haven't, you'll discover a book that's snappy and swinging, fun and informative. My original review follows.

"Doodly-doodly-Doot-doot! Toot-Toot!"

That's Karen Ehrhardt's delightful take on a Dizzy Gillespie trumpet line, and like the rest of this sparkling first book, every note rings joyous and true. In a somewhat daring move, Ms. Ehrhardt airs out the musty English poem, "This Old Man," with jazz-infused lyrics, and distills the essence of nine jazz giants: Louis Armstrong, Bill "Bojangles" Robinson, Chano Pozo, Fats Waller, Duke Ellington, Art Blakey, Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, and Charles Mingus.

The improvisations in "This Jazz Man" are authentic and fun--the text is made for reading out loud! Listen to this evocation of Charlie Parker, for example:

This jazz man, he plays five,
He plays bebop, he plays jive,
With a Deedle-di-bop! Bebop!
Give the man a hand,
This jazz man blows with the band.

Within the 5-line format of the original song, the author conveys the sound and spirit of these artists, while keeping the tone light and understandable for her young, perhaps jazz-naive audience (about 3 to 7 years-old). Along with each Jazz Man's stanza are the sounds and rhythms of his performance -- depicted in text incorporated with each illustration. When drummer Art Blakey "plays solos with his sticks" and "beats with the band," the percussive sounds "Chikka-chee! Chikka-chee! Bubbuda-bubbuda-bubbuda-BOMP!" pulse over his vibrating cymbals. Following the `performance,' older readers (and adults) can learn more about Blakey -- his innovation of the "press roll" and his role in nurturing new talent -- in the book's afterward. Riffing on the customary introductions of band members at jazz gigs ("Playing 4, form Washington, D.C... Edward Kennedy "Duke" Ellington"), the book briefly spotlights the life of each Jazz Man.

Illustrator R. G. Roth complements Ehrhardt's narrative pictures with multi-media illustrations that are playfully retro yet fresh and child-friendly. Airy compositions help children see the relaxed, expansive pose of the smiling Louis Armstrong, the verve and rhythmic creativity of "Chano" Pozo (how many times have you seen him in a jazz book for kids?), the playful attack of Fats Waller, and the stature and majesty of Charles Mingus. Roth displays a repertoire of textures and soft, engaging colors, and makes subtle references to Birdland, the Newport Jazz Festival, and other venues along the edges of book's `stage. For the small fry, a cute and playfully elusive mouse plays hide and seek throughout the book. "This Jazz Man" has an exhilarating finale -- after each man plays (1 through 9), all of the jazz icons appear on stage together:

This jazz band, they play ten,
We beg them to play again,
With an "Encore, we want more!"
Give them all a hand"
These jazz men make one great band!

"This Jazz Man" gets it right, rhymes it tight, and entertains without misrepresenting. (To put this achievement in context, too many kids' "jazz" books really focus on the blues--usually the rural blues, seen through an awkward sentimentalism--or solely on dance. Sometimes they confuse eras, portraying any jazz singer as a combination of Bessie Smith, post-WWII hep cats, and 1950's beats, with a dash of oddly misplaced 1970's styles.)

"This Jazz Man" is a natural for school or library audiences, rambunctious group singing, the first efforts of beginning readers, or as a bedtime treat for toddlers. One doesn't need to know one lick about jazz to enjoy the musicality of the rhymes and the understated but compelling jazz portraits: They stand on their own. In addition, teachers can easily adapt "This Jazz Man" to language units, numbers and counting, music appreciation, art, solo and group singing. Older students may delve further into the lives and times of the musicians through Ehrhardt's rich yet compact biographical sketches in the afterward. (Offhand, I can't think of any book--for kids or adults--that so succinctly and eloquently describes each musician's significance.) For readers who'd like to sample the actual music, Ehrhardt recommends recorded works for each Jazz Man: a couple tracks for each musician, and even two feature films (available on video) that display Bojangles' tapping talents. (Perhaps in future editions of this book, the publishers could include a companion CD/DVD.)

With apologies to the author--though inspired by her:

This jazz fan, I count one,
"This Jazz Man" is lots of fun!
With a smile and a nod and an "ain't that grand!"
Let's give Ehrhardt a great big hand!

Jude's Review of Jazz Man
By Helene Van Manen
I'm 3 and my Grandmother Helene reads this book to me. She said that my Doctor Beth gave it to me and my sister Scarlett and the author signed it. That made me smile.

I really like this book. My grandmother sings me it and i like music and instruments and can name the saxophone and trumpet and drums.I like the pictures of the conga drums.

I usually say, " read it again" when she's done and I can almost pick out all the numbers now too. Jude Stulb, Pueblo Colorado

I am an elementary school media specialist for grades 1 - 5. I read this book to my first and second graders. By the third jazz man they were chanting along with me. By the fifth man we were all singing along with the familiar song tune. They loved the scat phrases and repeated them over and over. What a bonus that these men are actual jazz legends. I highly recommend this book for a great musical read.

Handmade Baskets: From Nature's Colourful Materials (Search Press Classics), by Susie Vaughan

In almost every country in the world, there is a tradition of basketmaking, using plants that are indigenous to that particular area. But today, the plastic bag and cardboard box have replaced the basket's role of years gone by. However, there is something quite irresistible about the smell and the tactile appeal of a country hedgerow basket which is not only home-made but is sometimes even home-grown. This book aims to revive interest in the traditional and useful craft of basketmaking. Susie Vaughan offers a fascinating, step-by-step description of how to make a delightful selection of strong, natural-looking and colourful baskets, mostly using materials which have been gathered from hedgerows, woods and gardens.
Firstly, she covers the few tools required, then goes on to give a detailed, illustrated description of materials which can either be gathered from the annual prunings of a wide selection of bushes, or those which are farmed and can be bought from specialist suppliers. Her detailed step-by-step description of making a basket is accompanied by numerous diagrams and full-colour photographs to help explain the finer points of detail. She then explores variations in design, both of the shape of the basket and the alternative weaving patterns that can be employed to make the finished work that much more special. Finally, a superb gallery of photographs of finished baskets is included to provide you with ideas and motivation to go on to more adventurous projects.

This step-by-step guide describes how to make a selection of baskets using materials from hedgerows, woods and gardens. The author explains which materials are particularly suitable, and gives a comprehensive list of equipment. About the Author
Susie Vaughan lives in Gwent, South Wales. She trained and worked as a journalist, then made her first basket with willow shoots from a fallen tree, following instructions from a magazine. She later took classes and became an expert, specializing in hedgerow baskets, using material found in urban areas as well as in the countryside. She gathers material from local hedges, woods and gardens. She gives talks and demonstrations and her work has been widely exhibited.

Where do baskets come from?
By A Customer
Vaughan's book emphasizes collecting natural materials for basketry, with neat color pictures of appropriate vegetation. The last part of the book explains simple basket-making. Great enthusiasm builder and very useful guide for collecting. If you want more on weaving patterns as well as materials, look at Jensen's book "Baskets from Nature's Bounty."

Best book for baskets from wild material
By Maria Ivanova
The book is wonderful: written in a very clear language with simple to follow instructions, color figures worth thousands of words and a really inspiring photo gallery. The book is purposed for beginner-basketmakers that will gather material by themselves. Contains an extensive list of plants and how they can be used. In this point I find it more useful than Elizabeth Jensen's "Baskets from Nature's Bounty" - the wicker part.

I bought the book 8 months ago, made my first baskets thanks to it, and got enthusiasm for many more.

As my baskets are not yet perfect, at first I bought some more basket books to find out the basketmaking tricks but the other books did not teach me much more. In fact I soon got lost in wordiness and all I had to do is to reread some parts of "Handmade Baskets" and take a quick look at its pictures to find out what I did wrong. Neither of the other books was that clear.

Now when I'm going through it once again I wish it was not only 80 pages because I want more:-)

Not what I was expecting
By k0001
This of course is my problem. I had assumed from the title that it would use a lot of found materials and less common weaving materials. I was hoping for something that used grasses, herbs and other materials not the usual woody hard form materials. However it sticks with the traditional. Nevertheless it is a good basic book for someone beginning weaving.

A new dystopian/post-apocalyptic series from a New York Times bestselling author

My name is Theo, and I'm a resident of Oasis, the last habitable area on Earth. It's meant to be a paradise, a place where we are all content. Vulgarity, violence, insanity, and other ills are but a distant memory, and even death no longer plagues us.

I was once content too, but now I'm different. Now I hear a voice in my head, and she tells me things no imaginary friend should know. Her name is Phoe, and she is my delusion.

Or is she?

Gripping and suspenseful story with an interesting take on a post-apocalyptic world.
By Danielle Hernandez
As a little background, the story is meant to take place after the rest of the world's end. Oasis is the last livable place on Earth and is protected from the Goo that has destroyed the rest of the planet. Oasis is meant to be a utopian civilization, free of any violence, mental illness, and any real knowledge of Earth before the Goo.

The plot is great and the author throws in an interesting twist to the idea of a post-apocalyptic world. The book has a lot of suspenseful moments, keeping me on the edge of my seat wondering what was going to happen next. At many points, it was hard to put the book down!

However--and this is my reasoning for only three stars--it starts off relatively slowly with a lot of dialogue in order to explain the setting. I got the sense right away that the book was geared toward young adults because of the simple language and the technique of "telling" the story rather than "showing" the story. At some point the author decided to throw in some flowery vocabulary, that ended up becoming quickly overused throughout the next several chapters. Every once in a while the story gets clogged up with chunky sections of dialogue that aren't entirely necessary.

As I stated previously, it is a great story, the characters are believable, and the author does well to keep the reader's attention from chapter to chapter. If you're not easily hung up on writing style or choice of vocabulary and language, you'll probably love this book if you enjoy sci-fi / post-apocalyptic themes.

A different kind of sci-fi
By An Amazon User
I honestly really liked this book. It will probably go on my top books of 2015 list, and would definitely be a force to recon with if I read it after January first. To be honest, I’m not even sure where to start. Probably the first thing that leapt out at me, is his, mm, “imaginary-friend.”
Throughout the book, he has conversations with himself; at least, that’s what he’s been believing for quite a bit. This is interesting in the light of: A, it shows that he may be insane,--something that does not often happen with the main character especially in the first chapter of the book-- and B, this is kept up throughout the book. Instead of having a companion or lackey, we have someone who has mental conversations with him, allowing him to work things out as he goes without the knowledge of those around him. Another interesting thing about it is the setting. He finds himself on a devastated Earth; a planet that has been destroyed by a gary-goo-esque apocalypse--something where someone has created self-replicating nanobots that consume all in their path simply to make more of themselves. I can figure this hasn’t been used previously, because it wouldn’t be much of a story; simply a bunch of miniature robots sitting there, doing pretty much nothing. This Oasis has survived because of a barrier of sorts that keeps the nano-bots at bay. It is not simply the setup alone that has me loving this book, though.
The other thing that has me praising this book as possibly the best sci-fi book to be written this year, regardless of its short length, is the shear amount of twists. As a rough estimate, there was at least three plot changing occurrences that truly made sense, and actually progressed the plot. It was not a simple twist to be thrown at you as a, “Aha! I tricked you, and accomplished the practically obligated twist!” twist. No, these are twists used correctly to tie up loose ends, and be a logical conclusion. I suppose I should actually show how these apply to the characters though
The characters, even though there are very few relevant ones, are interesting enough. I will say that dima knows how to convey proper emotion. He understands how your typical non-superhero human will react to life threatening situation, not simply shrugging off gunshot after gunshot. He feels pain, which leads to a story which you can actually imagine yourself being in, an thus connecting to the character. I do have one problem in this area though: due to the nature of the first-person point of view utilized in this book, it leads to somewhat poor character development. The only two characters that you get to know, are Theo and his imaginary friend. This leads to many characters being present and important to the plot in one way or another, but never being truly fleshed out. I find the damage of this one small mistake can be easily overlooked when compared to the rest of the book though.
In final analysis of this book, I would say, even though it’s short, it is still absolutely marvelous. the few characters it does flesh out, feel lifelike and real, while the plot and sci-fi element truly make this a unique book. It takes the technology we will have in the not-so-distant future, takes it, and runs for the gold, using these elements not gimmicks, but as material to make it stand above and beyond its competition. I would give it a ten out of ten, with a must read recommendation.
I was happy to receive an advance copy of this book for my review.

Not what I had expected or hoped for.
By Karen Walker
This was not the story for me. I started out being interested in the story and was willing to stick it out to see what happened, but it is very slow going. I got half way into the story and pretty much checked out. It goes on and on and on and on and on.... all without ever really telling you much about what or why things are happening.

The beginning starts out with our main character, Theo and his "imaginary" friend Phoe (fee). Who live in this world of high technology, yet they do not want technology? I am so lost with this story. It really does not make sense to me. I had high hopes but it fell very short for me unfortunately. I really tried but it was too long and drawn out. It is lacking something for me.

I was provided this ebook complimentary to read and leave my honest review.

Never before has there been a greater need for deeper listening and more open communication to cope with the complex problems facing our organizations, businesses and societies. Renowned scientist David Bohm believed there was a better way for humanity to discover meaning and to achieve harmony. He identified creative dialogue, a sharing of assumptions and understanding, as a means by which the individual, and society as a whole, can learn more about themselves and others, and achieve a renewed sense of purpose.

As usual a superb book.
By Frank Bierbrauer
Bohm has a certain style in his writing which makes him stand out from others who write on similar topics. One aspect is his willingness to suspend his own viewpoint, at least to some degree, by introducing his approach to communication on an intimate level. This does not mean the kind of intimacy between lovers but it is of the same kind. What does this mean ? It means that it is communication without the presence of walls/barriers which interfere with the ability of one person to give rise to the same meaning in the mind of the other. This is the essence of communication at its most basic. The 'normal' mode of cummunication which takes place between people nowadays is way short of this ideal. The social barriers and thought constructions which are firmly embedded in the mind of most induce various automatic or reflex reactions when questions or comments are made which are in some way outside of the "allowed" list. These reactions can vary from fear, the most common, to anger and eventually in extreme cases to violence. How do they arise ? Through purely reflex reactions generated from countless experiences which promote a protective response because of the "existence" of the self. I say existence in inverted commas because Bohm denies this has any reality. Bohm uses his dialogue mode of communication to let people face their thought reflexes and stay with them ie staying aware while their mind and body undergoes its automatic reactions. Only this allows the mind to go beyond these usually unconscious reactions and proceed into a place where creation can occur. This means the creations of new ideas rather than a fallback into the old ones. This form of communication is far from easy to undergo and reactions of fear would be common as would eventual anger and frustrations as the self attempts to dominate in some way by either trying to control the dialogue or hide from it. This is overcome by staying with the discomfort until it dissipates by itself.
Dialogue offers much more than the current ways of communication such as discussions or negotiations which never face the serious issues. Bohm stresses the pathless approach, ie one where no direct goal is provided and no leader selected. This has some similarity to tribal councils practised by native Americans for example.
In this book Bohm through examples and ideas develops this mode to something useful for all of society. Bohm always leaves room for ideas to be generated from his own beginnings. As usual a superb book.

Making meetings productive
By A Customer
I read this book from two perspectives (1) is it useful for business? (2) Does it present some innovations in modern Buddhist thinking?
Every substantial business holds innumerable internal meetings. The participants will all say that they waste a lot of time in those meetings. Why do they waste so much time? Jack Welch in his book "Winning", in chapter two, "The biggest dirty little secret in business", writes that the problem is LACK OF CANDOR. "People do not express themselves with frankness". "They just don't open up; instead they withhold comments or criticism". "It is absolutely damaging". "Yet, lack of candour permeates almost every aspect of business."
David Bohm explains why this is the case and what you can do about it. The cause is that people hold opinions to which they are attached and when another person expresses another opinion and criticises the opinion of the first person, the instant reaction of the criticised person is to defend his opinion. This leads to an incredible waste of time and emotional energy. Instead the person whose opinion is criticised should suspend immediate reaction and try to understand what the assumptions are on which the opinion of the other person is based and suspend judgement and reaction. Before reacting he should also examine the assumptions on which he based his different opinion. This does require control over one's emotions and thought process.
David Bohm, being a great scientist, includes an amusing story about scientists. Max Planck a German Nobel Prize winning physicist, said about dialogues between scientists: "New ideas don't win, really". "What happens is that the old scientists die and new ones come along with new ideas". If that happens in business, that is no innovation, the company dies sooner rather than later.
This is one of the best books to understand and learn about creating candid dialogues.
Buddhism and new ideas.
The Dalai Lama refers to David Bohm as his guru. They met many times. Some useful ideas you can not easily find in Buddhism are the following.
Buddhism emphasises that you must try to reduce negative thoughts and emotions like, anger, jealousy and greed. Bohm emphasises that you must learn to observe your thinking process including the influence of emotions. Observing the thought process is a step beyond reducing negative thoughts and emotions. Another insight is that thoughts are from the past and so are feelings for which there is no word, he suggests the word "felts". Thinking is a current process that is influenced by thoughts and "felts". Also something you have to watch.
Bohm recommends that that if you talk and listen to other people you have to observe their body language, people do not communicate only with their voice. Candid dialogue depends on the ability to listen, to ask questions, almost more than on what you say.
Bohm explains the importance of coherence. Incoherence means that your intention and your results do not agree. Ordinary light is incoherent, the light goes in all sorts of directions, and if it is coherent it becomes a laser that is very powerful. Most groups are incoherent; the thinking of the members goes also all over the place. If they can think coherently and constructively the group develops enormous power. The power of coherent thinking in a group is an important concept. Coherent does not mean that all follow the leader. It means the group of many thinks creatively as one.
The book actually concentrates on dialogue on the level of society, so you have to modify some of the ideas to fit in a business environment.

On Dialoque
By Castellanos Fabio
The book titled "On Dialogue", by David Bohm,is an important read for anyone who has the interest to learn and understand the many causes affecting humankind. First, by understanding how our mind has become so conditioned and is so full of preconceptions that we are unable to listen and learn from others through an honest, open and unbiased process. We have become so fixated in our opinions and points of view and in our argumentative thinking that we are simply unable to learn by discovering through a process of sharing meaning with others.

It is written in very simple terms but it gets to the core issues impeding a true process of dialogue. Worthwhile reading and re-reading to help us be more cognizant of the need of suspending judment and beliefs when others do not think like us and how we may learn from others by all being opened and discovering together the essential needs and elements to function towards the betterment of humanity. One could say that the message is perhaps too naive in a world where the motto is driven by personal or national interests first before anything else. This does not take away the fact that we have become so sophisticated in constructing all sorts of arguments, which we use as pretexts to hide some essential truths that lie at the core of not wanting to forego our personal interests in favor of our common good. No wonder we are where we are.

Bridging Logical and Real Arguments
By Jaap Kamps
The book starts with a beautiful argument from Galileo's Two New Sciences (refuting Aristotelian belief on the influence of gravity on bodies of different weight). This is what makes this book far beyond the ordinary: it contains a wealth of instructive examples about the natural world, about society, about policy, about philosophy, and so on. These are not the usual made-up examples, but REAL ARGUMENTS: ranging from numerous samples of scientific argumentation to some more mundane arguments from newspapers. The author further introduces an informal method for analyzing (extracting and evaluating) arguments as they occur in ordinary language texts. The book not only offers an accessible introduction to critical analysis of theoretical argumentation occurring in informal texts. It is also of interest for logicians who want to have a better understanding of the considerations involved in analyzing unformalized arguments. This amounts, in my opinion, to a successful marriage between the insights from logic and the demands from reasoning patterns as they occur in substantive texts.

The Logic of real arguments
By E. Morozov
I've bought this book after reading Alec Fisher's "Critical thinking" which i liked very much. "The Logic..." is not an easy reading for me as it requires a lot of thinking about philosophical issues but very useful as it teaches how to tackle long and difficult arguments. I believe that is the main purpose of the book and if someone likes that sort of reading then this book is a good choice.

A guide to analyzing arguments
By bronx book nerd
This book teaches a method to analyze arguments so as to determine whether the arguments makes sense and their reasons lead to conclusions. Fisher uses what I would call a layperson's approach. That is, he does not use the methods of traditional logic, especially those of formal logic, but instead introduces what he calls the Assertibility Question;i.e. What argument or evidence would justify me in asserting the conclusion? (What would I have to know or believe in accepting the conclusion?) You get to this point after identifying the inference and reason indicators, figuring out how they relate to each other (are the reasons independent or dependent), are their preliminary conclusions which then becomes reasons for the final conclusion? Through this effort, one should be able to arrive with some confidence at the assertibility of a claim. The book is written for students, so for someone who is not assigned classwork going through some of the examples is tedious, particularly as Fisher first introduces the text being analyzed in full, then with notations, and sometimes excerpts again to review the analysis. Part of the reason that Fisher does this is because he wants to motivate the reader to believe that he or she can get far in their analysis and not really on experts or on the need to be an expert in the subject matter itself. This, I think, is a noble ambition.

The book has a supplementary chapter on formal logic, which I skimmed, and a chapter containing readings for independent work. Some of these are fascinating in and of themselves.
