Bridging Logical and Real Arguments
By Jaap Kamps
The book starts with a beautiful argument from Galileo's Two New Sciences (refuting Aristotelian belief on the influence of gravity on bodies of different weight). This is what makes this book far beyond the ordinary: it contains a wealth of instructive examples about the natural world, about society, about policy, about philosophy, and so on. These are not the usual made-up examples, but REAL ARGUMENTS: ranging from numerous samples of scientific argumentation to some more mundane arguments from newspapers. The author further introduces an informal method for analyzing (extracting and evaluating) arguments as they occur in ordinary language texts. The book not only offers an accessible introduction to critical analysis of theoretical argumentation occurring in informal texts. It is also of interest for logicians who want to have a better understanding of the considerations involved in analyzing unformalized arguments. This amounts, in my opinion, to a successful marriage between the insights from logic and the demands from reasoning patterns as they occur in substantive texts.

The Logic of real arguments
By E. Morozov
I've bought this book after reading Alec Fisher's "Critical thinking" which i liked very much. "The Logic..." is not an easy reading for me as it requires a lot of thinking about philosophical issues but very useful as it teaches how to tackle long and difficult arguments. I believe that is the main purpose of the book and if someone likes that sort of reading then this book is a good choice.

A guide to analyzing arguments
By bronx book nerd
This book teaches a method to analyze arguments so as to determine whether the arguments makes sense and their reasons lead to conclusions. Fisher uses what I would call a layperson's approach. That is, he does not use the methods of traditional logic, especially those of formal logic, but instead introduces what he calls the Assertibility Question;i.e. What argument or evidence would justify me in asserting the conclusion? (What would I have to know or believe in accepting the conclusion?) You get to this point after identifying the inference and reason indicators, figuring out how they relate to each other (are the reasons independent or dependent), are their preliminary conclusions which then becomes reasons for the final conclusion? Through this effort, one should be able to arrive with some confidence at the assertibility of a claim. The book is written for students, so for someone who is not assigned classwork going through some of the examples is tedious, particularly as Fisher first introduces the text being analyzed in full, then with notations, and sometimes excerpts again to review the analysis. Part of the reason that Fisher does this is because he wants to motivate the reader to believe that he or she can get far in their analysis and not really on experts or on the need to be an expert in the subject matter itself. This, I think, is a noble ambition.
The book has a supplementary chapter on formal logic, which I skimmed, and a chapter containing readings for independent work. Some of these are fascinating in and of themselves.
