The Nicomachean Ethics (Oxford World's Classics), by Aristotle

A student of Plato and a teacher of Alexander the Great, Aristotle is one of the towering figures in Western thought. A brilliant thinker with wide-ranging interests, he wrote important works in physics, biology, poetry, politics, morality, metaphysics, and ethics.
In the Nicomachean Ethics, which he is said to have dedicated to his son Nicomachus, Aristotle's guiding question is what is the best thing for a human being? His answer is happiness. "Happiness," he wrote, "is the best, noblest, and most pleasant thing in the world." But he means not something we feel, not an emotion, but rather an especially good kind of life. Happiness is made up of activities in which we use the best human capacities, both ones that contribute to our flourishing as members of a community, and ones that allow us to engage in god-like contemplation. Contemporary ethical writings on the role and importance of the moral virtues such as courage and justice have drawn inspiration from this work, which also contains important discussions on responsibility, practical reasoning, and on the role of friendship in creating the best life.
This new edition combines David Ross's classic translation, lightly revised by Lesley Brown, with a new and invaluable introduction and explanatory notes. A glossary of key terms and comprehensive index, as well as a fully updated bibliography, add further value to this exceptional new edition.

Classic work - well worth the read
By Amazon Customer
Do not make the mistake of dismissing Aristotle because he is 'just another dead guy.' In this classic text, Aristotle teases out a variety of virtues valued by the ancient Greeks and their world. Within, Aristotle gives the reader a schema for understanding both ancient and transhistorical ideas on virtue and relating well to others. His vocabulary and concepts regularly pop up in other works, up to contemporary times; thus, grappling with Nicomachean Ethics makes those other works more understandable. Standing alongside and thinking with Aristotle increases one's ability to discern and decide on right action. As with other philosophical works, be ready to accept befuddlement from time to time, and talk with others about your gleanings as you read (and read again). Also, it is not necessary to agree with all of his conclusions to be aided by his exposition; you may find that you comprehend humans quite a bit better. If you are not reading this as an assignment, take your time; if you are hurrying because you must, keep the text as a reference.

THE BASIC SOURCE!!!
By Robert W. Smith
Wow! I'm reviewing Aristotle's Nicomachean Ethics! First, I read this first at college 25 years ago. Re-reading it provided me an amazing a-ha!!! So much more made sense to me! It's one of those texts that is worth re-reading a couple of times in one's life, for as we mature, we are privy to new insights offered by this great person. First, this translation contained at least a half dozen translation errors. What I found to be errors off the cuff makes me wonder what other errors might have been made in the translation and editing process. The errors that I found were minor and would not have altered my decision to purchase this masterpiece. Second, while brilliant and while he discusses the values and virtues and deficits and aspirations and social processes, this piece does not focus upon the applied ethics that I most enjoy. I give this a solid "A" and highly recommend it for anyone who wishes to study human nature and ethical conflicts. Overall, the translation is probably easier to read than an older translation, most likely because of the difference between today's and yesterday's more eloquent English. Again, outstanding reading!
