Superb true crime

In December of 1978, Terry Sullivan was working as a state's attorney in Cook County, Illinois, just outside of Chicago. Lieutenant Joseph Kozenczak was commander of the Criminal Investigation Division of the nearby Des Plaines Police Department. And John Wayne Gacy was a thirty-six year old building contractor who had just lured away and killed a 15-year-old boy, Rob Piest. Over the next ten days, Kozenczak, Sullivan, and their teams of policeman and investigators would uncover Gacy's horrible crimes.
This is a remarkable book that sets the standard for true crime stories. More than just an insider, Sullivan played an active role in the Gacy investigation. Kozenczak, then a 16-year veteran of the DPPD, came to Sullivan and his assistants early in the investigation into Rob Piest's disappearance to seek advice on how to deal with Gacy, who was emerging as their prime suspect. Sullivan was thus a participant in the entire case, including Gacy's trial, and he presents a vast amount of information here in Killer Clown.
In this book, Sullivan (writing with Peter T. Maiken) paints the most comprehensive and accurate picture of Gacy that has ever emerged. It can be roughly divided into three parts: the investigation surrounding the disappearance of Rob Piest, the discovery of bodies on Gacy's property and the painstaking investigations into Gacy's past, and Gacy's trial and convictions for murder. For some, this book is "boring" because it spends too many pages discussing the police investigation. In fact, Sullivan actually does a service to true crime readers everywhere by detailing the interaction between a suspect and the police and how the investigation can be shaped by it.
And there is more than enough cruelty, sexual sadism, and lurid details in these pages for even the most seasoned true crime fan. Sullivan discusses the fates of many of Gacy's known victims -- how they were tortured before and during sex, how they were killed and how they were buried beneath Gacy's house, some in graves that they themselves had dug! In fact, after reading this book, one senses that Sullivan could only reveal so much in his writing without crossing the line into bad taste or sheer shock value; he himself writes that he begun to wonder "if there was any limit to [Gacy's] brutality."
A true story that reads like a novel, this book also has a huge cast of characters, from investigators to friends and neighbors to the victim's families. It's an exceptional account of an exceptionally evil man. I recommend it highly.

A "must-read" book for true crime followers

For anyone that follows true crime stories, "Killer Clown" is author Terry Sullivan's impeccably detailed and researched account of the John Wayne Gacy murders. Beginning with the seemingly meaningless piece of evidence (a photo receipt) that cast strong suspicion that Gacy may have had more to do with the disappearance of the victim that would be his final downfall to the ending of Gacy's innocence and freedom in the courtroom, this book should not be passed up. Sullivan does an outstanding job of researching the case that led police to the discovery of 28 young men that Gacy had molested and ultimately murdered, then buried in the crawlspace of his suburban Chicago home, as well as the discovery of 5 more bodies Gacy was responsible for. No clue is left alone and no stone was left unturned in Sullivan's mentally visual story. A truly frightening account, you feel as though you're right along with the police during their investigation of Gacy. It should be noted that this story can at times be gruesome in its revelations and depictions of the details of Gacy's deranged killing spree and may not be best suited for the sensitive reader. But after reading the book cover to cover, you almost feel like you were part of the investigation team that finally stopped Gacy's killing and eventually put him in prison which ultimately led to his execution. Immediately after being apprehended, in an apparent state of guilt and remorse, Gacy admitted to the killings, but shortly thereafter recanted on his confession and proclaimed his innocense all the way until his last day on earth. I spoke with Gacy several times before his execution and Gacy had so thoroughly convinced himself that he had never killed anyone, he believed the only crime he was guilty of was running a cemetary without a license. Gacy's take on the books and interviews and subsequent movie made about his case was that everything had been fabricated in an attempt to make him the scapegoat and to make the police and prosecutors look good. "Careers were made as a result of my conviction," Gacy once told me. Gacy's denial or not, Terry Sullivan and Peter T. Maiken's account of this true story is superbly written and conveyed to the reader and is a definate must read for any true crime buff.

Chilling, without shock value

I recently ordered a number of true crime books, mostly dealing with motive and serial killers for a study I'm doing. When I pulled this book out of the box, I was extremely disappointed. The front cover of Killer Clown is unnecessarily garish, bearing a closer resemblance to the National Enquirer than a solid, well written book (which it is). The back also proclaimed that there were "16 pages of shocking photos!" With one or two exceptions, they're hardly shocking, although I did pause over the one picture of a victim they chose to include. But that was more in sadness than in shock -- it was the face of an innocent, apparently happy young boy, and that spoke more strongly than any amount of gratuitous schlock could hope to.
This was a well thought out book, and kudos to Terry Sullivan and Peter Maiken for not drawing on the wealth of gore that came with Gacy's case. I agree with the other reviewers with regard to its methodical step-by-step review of the entire case, from his last murder to the handing down of the death sentence.
It's a shame, though, for I'm sure that some serious students of true crime may have passed on this book simply because of its packaging. If you're having similar qualms -- don't. This is a worthwhile read.

Like many of her fellow missionaries to China, Pearl Buck found that she was not immune to the influence of her adopted home. In this book Lian Xi tells the story of Buck and two other American missionaries to China in the early twentieth century who gradually came to question, and eventually reject, the evangelical basis of Protestant missions as they developed an appreciation for Chinese religions and culture. Lian Xi uses these stories as windows to understanding the development of a broad theological and cultural liberalism within American Protestant missions.

The rise of missions in nineteenth-century America was an overflow of America's religious and nationalist spirit. The development of liberalism in the mission field in the twentieth century, however, precipitated a major crisis within the American missionary enterprise. It also generated what Lian Xi calls a "reverse missionary impulse" as the liberal missionaries transmitted their own theological and cultural insights to their religious base at home. This development, he argues, became one of the chief ironies in the American Protestant efforts to penetrate and convert China. The untraditional, and often syncretic, religious and cultural views that emerged out of the missionaries' experience in the East enriched Protestant thought in America and contributed to the Modernist search for a broadened interpretation of Christianity.

The Whole World's in His Hands

Xi Lian's book is a well-written, well-researched, and fascinating account of the Protestant missionary movement in China 1902-1937. Reading it one sighs and thinks of the scramble since September 11, 2001 to learn about Islam. Geographical distance is no longer an excuse for ignorance of other cultures--and that applies to all protagonists. Xi writes of the gradual influence of China's culture and thought upon American Protestant missionaries, who came to China with ideals and good intentions but little knowledge; a substantial number,however, learned and returned to their own country with the "good news--gospel" that human spirituality is universal and the insights of the varying traditions are meant to be shared. God does not play favorites. When one reads of the ecumenical efforts among the Protestant missionaries in China in the 1920s one is astounded. That such efforts in the West had to begin all over again after WW II and the Second Council of the Vatican (1962-1965)is frustrating; we should be farther down the line.

The author is caustic at times, but always generous in his appraisals. To adopt the Chinese spirit of inclusion does not mean one's own beliefs will be diluted but that one's views and interpretations will be expanded.

The biographical accounts of three missionaries, Dr. Edward H. Hume,M.D., evangelist and then editor, Frank J. Rawlinson, and Pearl Buck illustrate the book's thesis: The good heart cannot be separate from a sound mind, but neither can the mind function to its fullest without sympathy.

This is a book worth reading!

About the Author
Andrew Webb is Professor of Radiology at the Leiden University Medical Center, and Director of the C. J. Gorter High Field Magnetic Resonance Imaging Center. He is a Senior Member of the IEEE, and a Fellow of the American Institute of Medical and Biological Engineering. His research involves many areas of high field magnetic resonance imaging and has resulted in more than 160 journal articles and five patents. He has taught medical imaging classes for both graduates and undergraduates both nationally and internationally for the past fifteen years.

Nadine Smith is a faculty member in the Bioengineering Department and the Graduate Program in Acoustics at Pennsylvania State University. She also holds a visiting faculty position at the Leiden University Medical Center. She is a Senior Member of the IEEE, and of the American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine where she is on both the Bioeffects and Technical Standards Committees. Her current research involves ultrasound transducer design, ultrasound imaging and therapeutic applications of ultrasound.

Great book for learning the basics of Medical Imaging

I bought this book for a senior level Electrical Engineering course in Biomedical Imaging at Michigan State University. The book does a very good job of covering the fundamentals of X-Ray, CT, MRI, Ultrasound and Nuclear Medicine. I actually read the entire book and have found it to be a valuable reference in learning the material. This books will be most helpful to those that have a solid background in math covered in an undergraduate engineering program, especially Fourier Transforms which are essential in these imaging techniques.

right to the point

Ajan Sumedho's teaching is so clear and simple it makes you stop and think--can it really be so? This series of lectures at the Buddhist Summer School run by The Buddhist Publishing Group during Sumedho's last few years of teaching in the west (I believe he's retired in Thailand)may feel repetitive because of the nature of lectures--but what Sumedho repeats needs repeating for most of us. He asks us to take refuge in awareness and brings that important message home through stories of his own life and his own mistakes in his early life as a Buddhist monk. I am reminded of Zen master Bankei who tells us over and over to remain in the unborn and Ramana Maharshi who constantly brings us back to the question 'who am I." The only difference is that Sumedho lives in the modern world, so some of his examples are easier for modern man to relate to than those of some of the ancients. I have listened to Sumedho's lectures and purchased his other books--being satisfied with all of them, but this is his best. I am grateful to have come across this wonderful, humble teacher.

Getting by with a Little Help from Your Friends . . .

Every once in a while, you will hear a radio interview with a professional athlete that strikes a chord, even though you have only be a amateur jock yourself. When asked what he has learned over the past seasons in his particular sport, the MLB or NBA player might say something like: "I have learned to LET THE GAME COME TO ME." Is it a brand new, earth-shattering idea? No, but might really be helpful if you are trying too hard to "make something happen" during your games. With the psychological bent in America, that seems to be a easy trap for those On The Path.

I get the same value from Ajahn Sumedho's books. I read for 5-10 minutes each morning before meditation just to set the tone . . . NOT to acquire new ideas . . . just to get encouragement and support. Doing 10 years of daily meditation is not like doing Billy Blanks' Tae Bo workout videos for 10 years. That change would surely be obvious!! I find the spiritual path to be less clear. Has ANYTHING changed?? Then I read a page or two, and Sumedho reminds you . . . "The goal is not to CHANGE YOURSELF . . . but become more MINDFUL of just what shows up . . .Like This . . . filtered through all your expectations and delusions . . . It is like hitting the re-set button when my computer is bogged down . . .I re-boot and feel clearer . . . I read his previous book,The Sound of Silence this way for a couple years before this title showed up in print. Same message, but it has been helpful to have some different words to allow the message to reach my . . . heart/soul/ whatever you choose to call it.

I will say, as a final note that with him having been a Peace Corps Volunteer before he studied in the Thai Forests, it seems like he can understand and work with the default settings that might be in my way. Also, I like that these are TALKS spoken to retreatants not deeply, metaphysical WRITINGS that occurred while he was alone with his laptop. Something about the spoken word works for me, less academic and more relational.

He and Pema Chodron have been wonderful guides for this former Midwestern altar boy who has been exploring a different spiritual path for the past decade. They both shine the light in front of you . . .so you can start to discover your own path and learn from YOUR OWN EXPERIENCES . . . as the Buddha encouraged his followers to do. Plenty of rocks to trip over in the dark and strange voices in the woods, but never boring. As Mary Oliver likes to say: "Tell me, what is it you plan to do with your one wild and precious life?"

Magnificent

This book is an absolute gem. It consists of the texts of about 30 talks given at a Buddhist summer school over a number of years. It is over 400 pages which makes it good value and every single chapter is outstanding. Ajahn Sumedho is extremely generous in his willingness to share his knowledge with the reader. He holds nothing back -- he wants you to benefit from his efforts as he has benefited from others' past efforts. Do yourself a favour and take this shortcut to wisdom. My deepest thanks to Ajahn Sumedho.

The Swayze's words to live by

A friend gave me this great little book as a gift. What a wonderful compilation of "Swayzeism's"! The money goes to cancer research so you feel good reading it. It's a great Christmas gift. My favorite from The Swayze is "The steps aren't enough". Swayze has always had more than the steps. He has the magic. Buy this for a Swayze fan and you will be very glad you did.

Novelty Book

Cute book. Thin. One quote per page. I think there could have been more effort put into this book in the way of backstories to the quotes. A cute gift for a Swayze fan but otherwise, save your money.

Very Creative! Easy to Enjoy

This is a fun read - it really is amazing how well the Swayze quotes and the Tao complement each other. Who'd a thunk it? Part of the fun of reading this book is remembering the movies from which the quotes are taken, and the author provides a nice summary at the end of the book in case you don't remember. Perhaps the author has another book in mind to follow this one. I agree with Trent - it's a unique gift, and the fact that the proceeds benefit the American Cancer Society makes it a worthwhile purchase. I definitely recommend this book if you want something to make you smile!
