A Book About Creating Lasting Change

I was certified as a Strategic Interventionist a year and half ago. With Anthony Robbins and Cloe Madanes and Mark and Magali Peysha guiding the studies and coaching, the amount of powerful strategies offered was life changing for me and my clients.

This book is a gift, sharing some of the best strategies for eliciting human change you will find. For example, let me share just one, the ‘elevation strategy’. The idea is if you help others, you will in turn be helped.

Mark shared a powerful story during the training about a lonely woman who would not give up junk food, specifically cookies. The coach told her she could eat three cookies a day. If she had more than that she would have to bake a few dozen cookies and hand deliver them to a local shelter. After several days of failing to stop at three cookies, she found herself making several trips to the shelter with freshly baked cookies. After a few weeks the women at the shelter looked forward to the cookies, and this woman looked forward to baking and delivering them. This powerful strategy accomplished several things; first it led this woman to help people in need. Next, it led her to make new friends which eliminated her loneliness and in the end gave her a purpose outside of herself.

Her Achilles heel became an avenue to build relationships, serve others, make new friends, and in the end eliminate her desire to eat cookies which were simply an addiction covering up her pain of being alone.

This is the power of Strategic Intervention. It is an elegant way to help others push though barriers and find the breakthrough to the next level. Some coaches may have tried to uncover ‘why ‘she ate the cookies, Strategic Intervention is based on knowing the Six Human Needs people are meeting at some level at all times. It wasn’t the ‘why’ that was most needed, it was about taking action, the heart of Strategic Intervention and this book. Once this woman took action, the other pieces all fell into place.

There are some very simple rules such as:

1. Never chase the price.
2. It's better to miss a good trade than to get into a bad one
3. Exit a trade quickly if it isn't working out. (love this rule)

Very thorough. Looking forward to reading this book again. This book is like having a mentor. Lots of good advice. I've been trading for four years and would recommend it to any new trader. It addresses the real problems all traders will have to deal with sooner or later in my opinion. Thanks to the author for sharing.

The essential guide to keeping it real in the market

This is one of my top 3 books that I've read that I can honestly say has given me a real edge in the market and has made me a better trader. From his honest statements on your ability to have an edge with a small trading account to his description of why indicators work, to his clear guidance on how to read charts and use trendlines an indicators, this is a *must have* for anybody who's serious about trading. If this is not your first book on trading, a lot of it will be familiar to you but you will *still* learn something. If it is your first book, GREAT place to start.

Do you currently use multi-timeframe analysis? If not, you NEED to. Are you using any type of trend following system? This book is for you. Have a successful breakout system? READ this!

My only issue with it was some of the indicators and chart analysis tools are glanced over with no guidance on how to use them or even the author's feelings on those indicators. For example, he mentions in passing using Fibonacci retracements, and while there are entire books on the subject, he mentions nothing specific about its usage (or his usage, or lack thereof).

Also would've liked to have more on using different indicators on different timeframes, whereas the author just says that different people like different indicators. So the vagueness is a little weird, but overall excellent book which has definitely made a very quick and noticeable difference in my trading.

State of Biblical Interpretation:
With the emergence of the postmodern Western world, even among the most conservative Christians, the change in contemporary view of the Bible, has radically shifted within our culture. We no longer quote the Bible for definitive scientific information about world history, geography, geology, and astronomy, and most other domains. Nobody now believes the sun rotates around the Earth, whatever the Bible was interpreted, scoring one for Galileo against his Inquisitors. The only remnant of the universal validity that was attached to the Bible, many years ago is the stand on the factual nature of the two stories of creation in Genesis.
"In this matter ..., contemporary biblical scholarship appears to be departing from the centripetal focus of inquiry prevalent in the 19th and throughout most of the 20th centuries and returning to the appreciation of diversity of method exemplified in ancient scholars such as Philo, Origen, the rabbis, the DSS community, Augustine, etc." Alan J. History of Biblical Interpretation:
Scientific reconstructive criticism has shown the importance of understanding the social, political, and economic milieu within which a biblical text was formed or edited. We thus must examine those forces which initiated the subsequent strata of interpretation and still motivate our own appreciation of the textual interpretive process. The impact of this awareness catalyzed modifying interpretation methods in many important ways.
Professor Hauser underlines the importance of such dramatic changes in interpretation, that has encountered biblical studies, during the past half century. These changes are bound to change the way in which Biblical scholars analyze and assess the history of the interpretive process, within methods for conducting biblical exegesis. The realization that employing a number of different approaches to understanding a biblical text can contribute richness to our understanding of that text, between other changes in contemporary biblical interpretive methodology, changed our understanding of the history of interpretation.
In recent biblical studies, the line between a biblical text and its interpretation is dimmed. Biblical interpreters interaction with the text is a dynamic changing one, rather than the ancient process of probing a static text to discover its meaning, literally or allegorically as have been the case with the Antiochene and Alexandrine traditions that prevailed since the Apostolic Fathers, and dominated late antiquity. That was just as true for ancient biblical interpreters as it is for us today. Even Apostle Paul is being now portrayed as was extracting the truths contained in the biblical texts, rather than was seeking methodological consistency.

Book & Series:
This is a volume in the series entitled "Library of Early Christianity", under the general editorship of Yale's Wayne Meeks, with a scope to enable readers to understand the historical forces that shaped early disposition on Scripture within the biblical period itself, and to recognize some of the characteristic forms adopted by early exegetes.
The book, contains two essays on biblical interpretation, Hebrew Bible and New Testament. The critical perspectives to the question of early Christian identity in the early Church, argue that the religious activity of the New Testament must be placed within the milieu of the Greco-Roman socio-political experience.

Early Jewish Interpretations:
In Part One, James Kugel, professor of Hebrew literature at Harvard, follows the history of the growth of Israel's sacred books, and the predominant necessity of interpreting these ancient books, particularly perceived during and after the Exile, to render them applicable in Jewish daily life. Several interpreters, such as the scholar 'sons of prophets,' scribes, Pharisees and Levites. From among this company of early interpreters, emerged a lineage of interpreters, called rabbis, since the second Temple, who ultimately produced an accumulated corpus of biblical commentary, notably the Mishnah and Talmuds. These latter comprised both legal details (halacha) and non-legal exegesis, including popular tales (haggada). Kugel's essay, continues to examine several interpretive texts to portray their embodiment of earlier tendencies, with examples from Qumran DSS, Philo Judeus, and the Targums, as well as examples within the Hebrew Bible itself of elaboration on earlier laws and exhortations.

NT to Rule of Faith:
In Part Two of the book, Rowan Greer, Emeritus professor of Anglican Studies, Yale Divinity School, briefly explores the formation of the Christian New Testament. Within the Gospels and epistles, the reader observes the reference and usage of Hebrew Scriptures in support of the preached gospels. The Apostolic Fathers, following Irenaeus of Lyon, and the Alexandrine Apologists, in the following centuries, defended the evangelic account of Jesus Christ, through prefigured types and allegories from the Old Testament. The Eastern and North African church fathers followed suit, with parallel lists of Old Testament texts, each quoted with a certain fulfillment attested by the New Testament writings. Due to debates with Gnostics and doctrinal controversies with other heretics, the 'canon' of the New Testament became gradually recognized, more clearly. For the first time, certain apostolic confessions, were identified as the Rule of Faith.

I had to work at it. This is the story of becoming a Hero the Hard Way." From his initial challenge—Hiccup and his fellow warriors-in-training must each pluck a dragon from a "Dragon Nursery" where 3,000 young critters are hibernating—the likable lad faces a host of hurdles and beats tremendous odds to emerge triumphant. After selecting a tiny, toothless dragon ("I shall call [my dragon] Fireworm," says nemesis Snotface Snotlout. "What are you going to call yours, Hiccup? Sweetums? Sugarlips? Babyface?"). Hiccup tackles the chore of training the stubborn creature, which leads to some fresh, funny dialogue between the two (Hiccup has the rare ability to speak "Dragonese"). A rollicking finale finds the duo rescuing Vikings from a ravenous, mountain-size dragon. Short chapters, clever slapstick, kid-pleasing character names (e.g., Fishlegs, Dogsbreath the Duhbrain) and goofy, childlike drawings will keep even reluctant readers turning these pages—and chuckling as they go. Grade 3-5–Young Hiccup may be the son of Stoick the Vast, chief of the Hairy Hooligans, but he isn't exactly heroic Viking material. When he and the other boys of his tribe are sent on a mission to fetch dragons to train, Hiccup comes back with the scrawniest creature ever seen. Toothless, as Hiccup names him, is also rude, lazy, and greedy, but when the tribe is faced with horrible danger, Hiccup's unorthodox dragon-training techniques prove successful and he and his unique beast become true heroes. Sprinkled throughout with funny sketches, scribbles, and ink blots, this is a goofy and exciting tale of an underdog who proves that brains can be just as important as brawn. Kids will hoot at the ridiculous names and sympathize with Hiccup's exasperation with his truly obstinate but strangely lovable dragon. Narrator Hiccup, the son of the ruler, is meant to be the next Warrior Chief, but he's a classical nerd, the least heroic boy in the old Hooligan tribe, so how is he to slay monsters? Grandpa says times are changing and the tribe needs a new leader, not just a big violent lump, but someone clever and cunning. Well, Hiccup tries, but he fails the initiation rites. Eventually, though he shows up Snotlout and the other bullies by getting the two gigantic monster dragons to fight one another, and though events take a bad turn after one of the dragons swallows him, things turn out fine; he escapes through the dragon's nose. The hilarious farce will appeal to heroic fiction fans as much as to scaredy-cats, especially since the author extends the nonstop parody with messy black-and-white pencil sketches of the bumbling bedlam. Great Fun For Kids & Adults Alike!

This book is the first in a series about a group of young boys embarking on a journey to become part of their village's viking clan. The boys must each capture a dragon and train it. The book is surprisingly engaging and very funny. The characters speak as you would imagine young vikings would - crude little-boy speak about snot and such, the dragons speak their own language, which you can learn throughout books in this series, and the author's narrative is sublime literary prose. With this blend, Cowell has the most unique literary style I have ever read! Parents will love the quick pace and unique style, boys will think it's cool, and girls will giggle.

This is one of my favorite books

I am one of the lucky generation that got to experience this book as a child, right in the prime 7-12 demographic it is intended for.

I can tell you with all honesty, I have kept it within reach of my bed for about six years now, even as I have grown to love Shakespeare, Huxley, and quite a few other old masters during my literature-loving days of high school.

(And I see you giving me that funny look- a scribbly little book about a crazed pack of Vikings and an ineffectively housebroken dragon? I am dead serious, and not ashamed to admit it.)

This book is a gem, and a keeper. I have only grown to love it more, now that I, thanks to some great Lit classes, have the tools to REALLY appreciate it. The recent Dreamworks movie, alike in the basics down to its snarky little hero, yet differing completely in conception, has only strengthened this love.

It's a very simple story, with a very simple hero.

Hiccup Horrendous Haddock the Third is small, skinny, and rather unremarkable. He isn't particularly good at sports, prefers a civil conversation to a fistfight, and can almost spell "motivation" correctly.

In other words, he's a terrible Viking. Being son of the Chief and The Hope and Heir of the Tribe of the Hairy Hooligans doesn't help matters much.

Following the ancient traditions of his clan, he and his fellow novices are ordered to capture, raise and train their own dragons in preparation for an all-important initiation ceremony. However, the dragon that Hiccup gets saddled with (and I do not mean that literally, ya movie buffs), though pint-sized and completely toothless, proves to be more than his little trainer can handle using the traditional Viking method (YELL AT IT). Consequently, Hiccup begins to design his own training techniques, talking directly to the beasts rather than relying on intimidation.

When a disaster occurs at the Initiation and a rather ominous Seadragonous Giganticus Maximus (or two) washes up on the shores of Berk, it is up to Hiccup and his crazy new ideas to save his tribe from Certain (Green) Death, and thereby prove himself.

For a book about the crude, violent shenanigans of (author-professed) historically inaccurate Vikings, it is unexpectedly deep. In fact, there's some very genuine, down-to-earth morals and wisdom here that I have only noticed by effectively growing up with this book. (Don't look at me that way! I'm serious!) The movie only scratched the surface of what this book really has to offer when it told the tale of a strange little Viking who ends up succeeding thanks to his strangeness.

"How to Train Your Dragon" is fundamentally a book about problems and how to solve them. It's about putting things in perspective. It explores (a la Hamlet, actually) the equalizing quality of Death. It examines (with incredible humor) the helplessness one can feel under the onslaught of a violent, misguided world, and how eccentricity can be valuable in an environment plagued with stagnant values. It, like the rest of Cowell's Hiccup books, shows a hero who would much rather talk things out with his foe than barge into violence.

The great irony of this book is that the dragon never gets "trained"- at least, not in the way you'd expect it to be. While exuberant, melodramatic and even crude in her execution, Cowell is completely down-to-earth when it comes to the real truths of life.

I will proudly read this, and the other Hiccup books, to my kids.

Aside from being a silent genius, Cowell is a pure delight to read. She plunges into the story unafraid, flinging sea-salt, sarcasm, and excessive capitalization everywhere. The combined effect of her wild, scribbly illustrations and her zany descriptions brings to mind an animated cartoon- it's all very cinematic, and it's not surprising at all that someone felt the itch to make a movie from it. If I made this book sound like a introspective epic, I will tell you now, it's NOT. It's a very light-hearted melodrama with a loose sense of logic, that evokes the bright, brave exuberance of Roald Dahl and Quentin Blake.

Fare carefully, though, sailor- Cowell's humor is colorful and varied. You'll find light humor, black humor, sarcasm, irony and slapstick- there are a few intelligent jokes and lot of really stupid ones. (The Vikings- aside from Hiccup- aren't really known for their eloquent communication skills.)

If there is a low point about this book (and the other Hiccup books), it is that Cowell delights in the disgusting, and is unafraid to make you cringe- snot and excrement are not only discussed- they actually mark significant plot points.

Still, if you can stomach a few (thankfully brief) bathroom gags, a few risque plays on words such as "Big Axe Books", and a distinct lack of female characters (Hiccup's mother- very much alive- is the only one of consequence, who shows up for about four sentences total), you're in for a real treat. If nothing else, it is a very entertaining read that will give your kids the giggles, and give you an opportunity to stretch your acting skills: with its gruff Viking yellers, sarcastic heroes, and self-satisfied dragons, the book BEGS to be read out loud.

(By the way, the book is worth reading for its incarnation of the Green Death alone- he's quite the suave, self-satisfied philosopher of sorts, a fabulous villain that wasn't quite given his full dues in the movie version, because the dragons didn't talk. Hiccup's grandfather Old Wrinkly, the old Gobber, the real role of Snotlout as the ultimate bully, and the original, best-friend role of Fishlegs need some love as well. Plus, unlike the movie, there are no amputees! (That's all in the second book. Har har har.))

This has steadily been one of my favorite books for six years, and I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

Watch out for bad editions

The book is fantastic, great story fun illustrations and a great read-a-loud.

However... There are some bad copies of it floating around where a group of pages are doubled up and a group of pages are missing. If you order this wonderful gem, be sure to check the pages around 121-152. Unfortunately this is at one of the very exciting parts of the story so best to find out before beginning reading.

Fortunately the publisher is very friendly and helpful about replacing mis-produced books and you just have to contact their customer service to remedy the situation.

So do enjoy this little treasure.

Good scifi

I received an ecopy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.

I found this book very hard to get into compared to the first :/ It took 30% of the book to get started, which I didn't really like. I kept putting it down and couldn't really concentrate.
I felt like Gabriel was a whole other person in this book and that had me confused in the beginning, so it took me a while to get back into it.

There was a lot of action in this one, but I felt like it should've started from page 1 and not first a 100 pages in, because it felt kind of rushed and I felt like it wasn't explained all too well at times.

The characters I liked. Nate was a bit weird in the beginning of the book, but he was still a great character and I actually think he's my favorite.

Still not quite there yet ...

So, the plot thickens in this one, the characters' fate is left hanging and I'm guessing a big battle is looming in the next book. Unfortunately, there are too many things happening at once. I get that it's somewhat realistic to show so many different sides and allegiances, but you can feel yourself getting lost in the middle of all this. As in the first book, I feel like there's a huge problem of characterization, like the whole process isn't complete. To those main and almost-main characters that we don't know that much about, are added even more secondary/tertiary characters, just names really, characters we only see for a few chapters before we forget all about them. The villains are all very one-dimensional. I kind of lost patience half-way through.

Two other things : the completely forced, unexplained and unnecessary romance. We've barely seen Gabriel and Claire interact with each other in the first book and suddenly they're mad for each other, each other's reason for living, and from a reader's point of view, it doesn't make sense. Especially to me, who's so picky when it comes to romance in fiction. Same goes for Nate and Celes. Other than the fact that I think Nate is one of the least interesting character in these books, why the need to pair them up when, again, they've barely interacted before their romance is forced on us ? I also wanted to point out that the action scenes were a bit hard to go through. The author has this stop-and-start way of writing action, in which the sentences are very short and concise, there's a period every 6 or so words and I think the narrative loses its rhythm because of it.

Then again, I liked the last few chapters a bit more than the rest, and they almost made me want to know what happens next. I stand by my first rating though, because it really wasn't enough to make up for the previous 200 pages.

good vs evil

This book was very Black ore White ... ore.

The white ore vs the black ore, good vs evil, Gabriel vs the Horseman. Will Gabriel save the world or will he crumble under the need for him to lead? Well we won't find out in this book so you'll just have to wait till the third.

This book was more about Gabriel finding himself and truly discovering his relationship with the ore, and how he can use it to save the world from the black ore.

Usually the second book is quite boring and just sets you up for the third book but really, I quite liked this book.
It's got some more kick ass fight scenes, some real plot twists (that I predicted in the early stages of the first book but still exciting to see it happen), and ultimately just makes you understand more about this world in the future, and who the real enemy is... DUN DUN DUUUNNNNN.

I have already recommended this book to everyone I have talked to, I really enjoy them and hope others can too.
