The doom Pussy was the first book on Vietnam to chronicle aerial combat. Among the truckloads of fan mail the author received were scores of letters from veteran pilots who claimed they had carried the book as their "bible" on the conflict.

At a Vietnam War veteran's reunion in Las Vegas in August 1969, the celebrants were current members of two of the oldest units in the U.S. Air Force: The 8th and the 13th Tactical Bomb Squadrons (TBS). Formed as "aero squadrons" in 1917, their histories are studded with stirring escapades and flying lore. Patriotism to them was not a thing of scorn, but of tradition and high challenge. In over half a century of serving their country the squadrons had flown everything from SPADS and DH-4s at Saint Mihiel to B-26s in Korea.

The 8th and 13th veterans of Vietnam were honored to have as their special guests six men in their eighties, a rare and vanishing breed who had helped pioneer aerial warfare over Europe in frail, single-engine biplanes.

These gallant aviators of the 8th and 13th Aero Pursuit Squadrons who flew in World War I, sat at a table near the rostrum. In a touching scene before the program began, the glorious old pelicans quietly rose, shoulder blades straight, to toast with champagne the squadron hero of other times and other wars, General Carl A. "Tooey" Spaatz. After World War I, he had made global headlines flying the famed Question Mark to a world endurance record of 150 hours and 50 minutes. In 1947 he was named the first Chief of Staff of the new U.S. Air Force and remained an uncommonly popular officer.

Earlier in the evening, Gen. Spaatz had stopped by Elaine Shepard's table. "I have read your book, The Doom Pussy, twice," he said. "I keep it on my night table."

Early Vietnam air war from a WWII perspective

I flew US Army helicopters, UH-1H and UH-1C gunships, for the 4th Infantry Division in the Vietnam Central Highlands in '67-'68. We circulated a copy of "The Doom Pussy" around the unit, and it became a touchstone for many of our conversations. In fact, the cry a character in the book used when starting a takeoff, "Stony Burke out of chute five!", cribbed from an early Jack Lord (Hawaii 5-0) TV show about rodeo riders, was used by gunship pilot Gambler Deuce when he began his takeoff.
It is a fascinating look at the effort of pilots in the early days of the conflict, when the escalation was in its early days and both sides were trying stuff out to see what worked. Although death is not a stranger in "The DOOM Pussy," in fact, that was a much less violent phase of the war, sort of "Terry and the Pirates" on steroids. Later, when the technology matured and the numbers of fighters increased substantially, things got much more deadly.
However, the thing that struck me about the book was the tone, clearly an echo from World War II. Some of the individual words were modern for those times, but the attitude towards the "adventure" was a rousing "let's go get 'em" sort of thing that by '67 was already obviously naive. Looking at the history of the author, coming of age and popularity as an actor at the height of the war, the reason for this becomes apparent.
So it serves as a dual history, showing on one hand the actual events of flying missions over South Vietnam in the early '60s, and on the other hand clearly reflecting some of the attitudes that got us in so deeply in the first place. For this unique combination it is unsurpassed.

Doom Pussy

This was one of the first books written about Air Force experiences in VN. I remember reading it while stationed at Vinh Long in the Delta. We were flying helicopters and wondered if the world yet knew what we were doing in the Mekong Delta with the 13th Aviation Battalion. The war as this woman author portrays was still starting as she wrote, and hungry war correspondents were trying to get their new books out to describe "The Only War We've Got" before it was over. No one knew then that the Vietnam war would go on and on, over a decade. The two colorful pilots she is friends with were typical of those early warriors from the Cold War era who were yearning for a real fight, after all those years waiting for something to happen with the Communist threat. My book, "OUTLAWS IN VIETNAM" describes flying Huey D-models later in 1966-67, just before TET. When we read this author's work while in country, we were trying to see if anyone had yet captured the flying experience occurring in the Vietnam conflict.

"Into the Jaws of gthe Cat"

I first read this book years ago, loaned it to a neighbor and never got it back .For the most part, this is a factual story about the Viet Nam war. The story revolves around the 13th Bomb Squadron (Tactical) a B-57 Canberra outfit known as the Devil's Own Grim Reapers. Some of the aircrews' antics are quite humorous; other parts are more serious. This is a well written report using factual military terminology. The book gets its title from a stuffed cat kept on a shelf behind the bar of the Danang Officers Open Mess (DOOM). The squadron's motto was " I have flown into the jaws of the cat" meaning North Viet Nam. The 13th was assigned to Ubon Royal Thai AFB when I served there in 72-73. Now if only I could find recordings of "What the Captain Means" and "Strafe the Town and Kill the People."

Although he released his first album only in 1991, by the time of his death Shakur was at the top of his field, a smash-hit recording artist who had also received acclaim for acting in such movies as Juice and Poetic Justice. He had also seen his share of controversy: an armed robbery in which he was shot several times; the murder of a former friend (in which some observers tried to implicate Shakur); a conviction and prison sentence for sexual assault. The authors acknowledge Shakur’s deeply troubled childhood—his mother, a former Black Panther, was tried (and acquitted) for conspiracy to commit murder; his stepfather was on the FBI’s 10 Most Wanted list—but they also celebrate the rapper’s intelligence and his gifts as an artist who wrote about love and respect, not hate and violence. I've read a lot of books about Tupac and 1990s rap music. This era is what defined the boundaries of rap music and if you listen to what rappers were rapping back then, you realize whats being said today was already said, and that all the rappers of today are profiting off of what Bigge and Pac made possible. As you can tell I take the life and times of Tupac Shakur very seriously and because of that this book offends my soul.

If you are looking for a very general and easy to read adventure through Pac's life then look no further, the authors write very short chapters, the shootings that Pac endures take up no more than ten pages, which is ridiculous to me (Although that could be because I read a book called "LAbyrinth" that is entirely dedicated to researching just those two incidents). The authors have a PHD and will often interject long and and unnecessary backgrounds of people and places to give the impression that they are putting Tupac in context but judging from the way they talk about the music it is clear they have no idea what they are dealing with. For the most part they get a lot of stuff right, but they leave out IMMENSE amounts of information. For example, the movie Gang Related and Bullet were completely ignored (possibly because they were released after his death, i'm not sure). They also referred to Mickey Rourke as being a part of the movie Juice, and that's just wrong and bad research. It implies that they haven't seen Juice, which was Tupac's most famous performance!

It's not a bad book, you will enjoy a lot of it if you like Tupac but if you are VERY interested in getting as much new information about Tupac as you can, this book offers nothing new. It takes its best parts from other books already written. The best book it uses is called "Got Your Back" and its written by Pac's close friend and personal bodyguard at Death Row. It is worth a whole lot more than this book because it gives you a clear sense of the man and not just a run-though of all the publicized events that defined him.

Couldn't put it down..

Let me start off by saying that I'm a HUGE Tupac fan, throughout the good bad and the ugly. I've studied his work, and other books based on his life. None of them touch this one. Even as a fan that's read up on the man, this book gives you so much more. I read it within 3 days and at it's end i wanted more. There so much background and detail to paint the imperfect image of Tupac Shakur that you feel like you're meeting him for the first time. What I loved most is that the book isn't glorifying Tupac as some kind of saint, but more touching on his successes and failures as a man and an artist.

If you're a fan or just interested in why he impacted both Hip-Hop and American as a whole, it's a must read.

I learned more about Tupac and more understanding of his life couldn't put the book down one of my favorite books ever so i think anyone should get this book if your a real fan of Tupac RIP Tupac Thug Life Forever.

An excellent resource for A2K VBA.

I just bought this book and I think it is an excellent book to learn VBA within AutoCad. I took a class in Autocad VBA back in the summer and got a copy of Using Autocad with Visual Basiic but found this books content a little lacking in terms of demonstrating the overall power of VBA. Autocad 2000: A VBA programmers reference is very good in exploring the Autocad object model as well as providing lots of sample coding. Also includes an extensive reference of Autocad VBA objects, methods and properties. An excellent book overall.

I have only recently delved into the further workings of AutoCAD 2000 and thought I'd try my hand at VBA Programming. So I bought this book. As an beginner to programming in general (though not to VB6) I thought the book would be a little above my experience.......WRONG!! This book is an excellent publication for beginner to intermediate users. If, as a VBA programmer, you can't find anything useful in this book then maybe you need to consider your career..........Absolutely outstanding

About the Author

Kate Hudson is a Golden Globe Award winner and Academy Award–nominated actress, producer, and entrepreneur. She is best known for her roles in Almost Famous, How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days, and Bride Wars, which she also produced. On television, Kate received critical acclaim for her guest-star appearance on the hit show Glee. She is the voice of Mei Mei in Kung Fu Panda 3.

Kate’s love of design and fashion has seen her become an international style icon and muse for some of the world’s top designers. She has also been featured in many global advertising campaigns, most recently the renowned Campari Calendar, and has been the face of major retail brands, including Ann Taylor and Almay.

Pretty good for me

I always read the worst comments first before I order the book just to see if I still want to read it. I bought this one as soon as it came out, so did not have that prerogative this time around. I actually got a kick out of the bad reviews as they complained that this is all 'old news'. Well most self-help books are all old news, guys. She is simply summarizing how she went about being healthy and happy. If you don't agree with her method, so be it, but don't criticize someones' effort to share their life story....and this is a kind of self-help-bio. Sure there may be mistakes (I have not finished the book), but publishers always have a deadline. She is a busy girl, so I'm sure she was under pressure to finish the book. Anyway, all the info I have read (which I already know most of it) has just given me new incentive to do what I am supposed to do, eat right and exercise. We all have our own methods to achieve goals, this was hers. She is just sharing her way of going about it, and if you can relate, that's great! I enjoy reading everyone's adventure in life and this kind of helped me get back on track. I'm sure next year I will have to read yet another health book to push me in the right direction, because I continually need that little push. The only reason I gave it a 4 instead of 5 is because of all the photos throughout the book. They were more like a models photo shoot. It kind of took away from her message by showing us her beauty. We can't all look like that and the photos do not show someone overweight or with imperfections. Too much of this has made young women want to look like stars, we need to show the not-so-perfect public occasionally and how they accept who they are. I am not overweight, nor have I ever been, but it would have been nice to have her show us a little cellulite, wrinkle or two, or even bloodshot eyes when not getting enough sleep. That would have made us all relate.

Pretty Happy

Pretty Happy: Healthy Ways to Love Your Body by Kate Hudson was surprising to me. I never expect much from celebrity books but this one delivered. You could hear Kate Hudson's tone come through the book especially when she was talking about how she felt misrepresented in interviews when asked about her diet or exercise regime because it is a work in progress and changes to meet her body's changing needs. Never does she get preachy in the book nor does she tell you that if you do these things you can have a body like hers. In fact she kind of discourages that type of thinking.

I don't think that any of the advice in the book is harmful with the possible exception of the chapter on cleanses. I could see where people with metabolic disorders such as diabetes could get into trouble if they followed the cleanses. Otherwise the advice seems to be very sound. I would recommend this book.

Pretty Happy I Bought This Book!

I'm 1/2 way through this book in one sitting, but I already love it. I was hesitant to buy it because I wondered if her age would not be relatable to me and where I am in my life and I'm finding it is. I'm 56 and still searching for happy, healthy ways to love my body. That never ends. What I have found refreshing is that it is also a workbook with lots of opportunities to think and write about thoughts, feelings and beliefs. Knowing which dasha I am doesn't really matter as much to me as learning to listen to my body. Paying attention to the feedback it is giving me and honoring my body for all that it does for me. In some ways it sounds so simple, but in other ways it isn't and it's all a matter of my mindset. I am looking forward to continuing the book, going back and re-reading and I'm highlighting as I go. I know that learning to be patient with myself is a lifetime job!
