This is a tiny book which is full of powerful principles that can totally impact your life and change the course of your life if you read it prayerfully and with an open mind. Brother Hagin shares personal stories and scripture to remind us that God is a loving Father and desires for His people to be abundantly blessed so they can bless others. I have been studying the word of God and the principles that Brother Kenneth Hagin shares are in line with scripture. This book is not just a name it, claim it, get what you can kind of book. It is written from a Pastor's heart who has seen lack and wants to share the wisdom he has learned with all Christians, not so they can become self centered and fat, but so they can have resources to help others in time of need, and pay their bills, and feed their families. Believe me there is no glory in not being able to provide for your own family. I would encourage you to read this book prayerfully and ask the Lord to direct your steps.

Awesome book on portability

This book does a really great job at talking about code portability. It definitely was an eye opener. However, it started loosing me around chapter five so I paused to increase my knowledge of programming and I will return it to later when my programming understanding increases.

A bit out of date

I would not recommend this book for an experienced programmer. If you know that sizeof(int) can vary, CRLF vs LF differences on Windows and Unix, and what little-endian is to network programming then you are already know enough to not need this book.

But if you are new to C/C++ programming or a student, then this book is likely a good read. The majority of the book builds awareness of portability issues, programming in the large, and common tools for professional programming (in the context of C/C++).

In 2011, I find that most of my C an C++ compatibility issues across operating systems are largely resolved by using STL and including . The latter was not standard in 2005 (when the book was published) as it is today. As such, the book spends time explaining issues that are easily resolved by relying on these include files and libraries. There is a framework library implemented in the book called "Posh" (Portable Open Source Harness) that repeats much of along with some functions that handle endian-ness and floating point variations between processors. Ironically, the book fails to mention Boost, which is a popular starting point for portable C++ development.

The harder C/C++ compatibility issues aren't easily resolved with header file macros. The real challenges of portable coding come from the fact that graphics, threading, I/O, networking, and APIs for making system calls vary widely between different flavors of Unix, Linux, and Windows. To which the book makes an effort to raise attention to, but very little effort on actually solving. The chapter on networking is 6 pages and doesn't go beyond declaring #defines for the subtle differences between Winsock and Unix sockets. Good luck trying to reconcile ePoll and IOCP, or the difference socket ioctl calls between platforms. The book rarely goes deep on any specific area of programming.

Some of the wisest words for marketing professionals can be found in this book, not only because Gerald Michaelson' extensive studies but also by the fascinating framework he uses. Applying Sun Tzu's philosophy to marketing makes a lot of sense. Sun Tzu's the Art of War contains a great deal of wisdom applicable to marketing and Mr Michaelson illustrates this beautifully.
Marketing professionals from all cultures will enjoy this book, as it makes relevant the universal paradox of business - that strategy must be like water, with form yet formless, and most robust when it is least rigid. Such ancient Taoist's insights are prsented here in a fresh and entertaining style that will enlighten every marketing mind.

Great Application of Sun Tzu to Marketing

I have studied Sun Tzu for over a decade and have applied the "Art of War" in various ways and in various businesses. I have read several different interpretations; as well as many attempts to apply Sun Tzu to the modern business world. Many authors fail, leaving us with only lightly touched "common sense" application and vague examples to learn from...Michaelson succeeds.

Michaelson's application, theory, examples, and format are all very successful in the use of Sun Tzu's 12 chapters translated into the world of Marketing. Each chapter is divided into smaller sub-topics, making the work easy to pick-up for quick reads. There are a few chapters detailing step-by-step stratagems. All points are reinforced with Sun Tzu's quoted text and numerous real world business examples. Even though it's a fairly easy read, I found myself skipping backwards often to connect sub-topics that build to the main point...this work gets deeper than most.

This is a definite recommendation for those wanting to apply strong Sun Tzu strategic theory to Marketing. Skip other variations of the "Art of Business" that aren't as in-depth and spend some time within these pages of real world examples and deeper Marketing principles.

On reading ... I love her even more

Vivienne Westwood, the book, is part memoir and part biography of the British icon of fashion. It is not really “co-written” by Westwood – it is more “as spoken to Kelly” because her words are in quotations. But they are extensive. Kelly adds detailed commentaries and summaries of her conversations with him. In addition there are lengthy quotations from associates, her brother Gordon, her two sons Ben (from her first husband Derek Westwood) and Joe (from her second relationship with Malcom McLaren). For some readers this may detract from the flow, but I found it okay except for a few times when I had to check who was making the comments.

The book commences with the 2014 Paris week before starting from the beginning (1941) – from then onwards it is a chronological memoir. It sets the scene of the early 1960s at a time when her first husband briefly managed musicians before most were famous, such as The Who, John Lennon, and Eric Clapton – all emerged from art schools, as Vivienne did. It was a time of the “crossover from art to music and from graphics to sales and marketing … into running businesses that fused pop iconography, fashion, music, and happenings.”

After a brief marriage to Derek, it was her relationship with Malcolm McLaren (her brother’s friend) to 1979 that was intrinsic to her fame. McLaren, the provocative British musician, artist, and band manager of Sex Pistols, brought anarchy, radicalism, and “a restive atmosphere” to Westwood. The volatile relationship also brought a “safe island of creative complicity.” Hence Westwood’s punk period began, as did their iconic shop at 430 Kings Road, “the epicentre of a global fashion revolution.” It was where they reinvented and rebranded fashion, starting with embellishments, slogans, and graphics on T-shirts.

The book details the shop, the clothes, the cuttings, the designs, the partnerships, the journey, the “power to disturb” and the “politicization of clothing.” While many viewed it as the “sexually ambiguous fusion of world-worn … razor-sharp mod, threatening rocker … and safety pins” others viewed it as “degenerate, puerile and willfully ugly.” The book continues with the business, the expansions, the designing, and the making of the fashion.

Vivienne Westwood, the maverick ideas person, was on her own from 1982. While her designs were having a wider impact she “needed to find better, faster and more responsive manufacturers.” During her Italian period she added her name to her designs, and a logo. Her dictum was now, “the more creative you are the more you need a structure.” She moved into her collections and high culture period, as well as human and ecological activism.

The book concludes with her relationship with her husband, designer, and creative partner Andreas Kronthaler, twenty-five years her junior. It tells of their first meeting in 1989 when she was 48 and he was her 23-year-old student. Kronthaler gives a detailed account of his impression the very second he saw her. The rest is history.

McLaren Bashing

It is no secret that, ever since I read "From A to Biba" and "Quant by Quant", there has been a special place in my daydreams for an assuredly idealised and somewhat chronologically inaccurate 1970s King's Road, London. I've often imagined bobbing into Biba for some knee-boots and popping into Mary Quant for some pop-art makeup*. But until I read this bio/auto-bio, I never, but never, envisaged wandering into Dame Vivienne's "Worlds End" store on that same blue-skyed Saturday morning. Perhaps because it is in such a different world altogether from the non-challenging swinging London I have always imagined. I really didn't know that it (and its predecessors, "SEX" for one had even existed. Punk had shops? Who knew?). "Vivienne Westwood" by the woman herself and a journalist who doesn't seem to have any real interest in fashion has set me right. The book is not great literature - the writing is clunky and not fully synthesised - Westwood's lengthy quotes are strung together with some breathless praise (and McLaren bashing). I could have done with more about the process of design and more details about the actual -- err -- clothes, but if you are at all interested in fashion, twentieth-century London, punk or that sort of thing, this is a must-read. (But skip the last enviro-preachy couple of chapters). Mrs Westwood has apparently never suffered from a moment's self-doubt or uncertainty about her own talent or peerless moral goodness which makes for an invigorating read but at times some rather dodgy product.
