How Is Your Spirit Today? Connect and Live Your Joy!

"How is my Spirit today?" Is there a way to make the transition from ego to Spirit? Sonia Choquette's "The Power of Your Spirit, A Guide to Joyful Living," takes you through the transition from an ego driven life where we focus on getting more, striving after and living by limiting beliefs to a life filled with peace, joy and purpose in four clear steps. The first step is what Choquette calls, the "Awakening."" Like Humpty Dumpty, once you enter the awakening phase of your spiritual transformation, the world as you know it shatters - never to be reassembled again. And yet you discover that it was merely a shell that hid from you a much greater and more expansive reality that promises rewards, fulfillment, challenges, and peace like you've never known." This quote describes the first pivotal moments of "unaware awakening" in my life over 15 years ago when I desperately wanted a child and at the same time realized there had to be more to life than shopping for new outfits, binge drinking and making my life look perfect on the outside. I did not know that once I started looking within, my life would never be the same. But, rather than running from myself any longer, I was ready to change the channel and begin to unearth the spontaneous, authentic me who loves to teach and wants more than anything else to serve Life.

Choquette illustrates her work with stories from her own experiences, family and clients throughout her years of teaching and sharing. One of the tools she teaches is to check in with your most authentic self by asking the question, "How is my Spirit today?" It's in this reconnection every day that keeps us from spiraling endlessly backwards. She even recommends you give the Spirit part of you a special name, so you can identify and relate more easily. I call mine "Sparkles" and try to remember to ask each day, "What would Sparkles like to do today?" Once you ask the question, breathe and connect to the authentic part of you and answers come. For me it's letting go of the fear of travel so I can teach yoga across the continent, giving myself permission to go for it and add new venues so I can reach more people, yoga with my feet in the grass or pausing in the midst of chores so I can play in the mud with my son! It takes practice, but eventually we can all become more masterful at leading our lives connected to Spirit and even become the kind of person we want to be around!

As a yoga instructor I especially like the reminder she offers of "Keeping Your Fire Burning." "Tend to the fire of your spirit everyday. Every morning gently stretch, move, bend or walk for at least ten minutes shortly after awakening. Whether expressed in a few yoga postures, a trip to the gym, or a simple walk around the block, physical movement keeps your Spirit burning strong and channels its power toward your highest creative expression. Being stagnant or spending too much time in your head causes the fire to die out." Choquette's teachings have definitely impacted my life as I've learned to introduce Spirit into all of my life; not only when it's safe on the yoga mat. It's when we have the courage to put the rubber to the road in our daily lives, accessing the Spirit at the workplace, waiting in the airport or stuck in traffic that we can keep expanding into the joyful power of our Spirit! "A Guide to a Powerful Spirit"

"The Power of Your Spirit" is an important book on making a connection with your higher self (spirit). As Sonia mentions, this connection helps and nourishes regardless of outside circumstances. "The Power of Your Spirit" is written with the essence of an abundance of love, and is an empowering guide that helps increase the ability to be graceful, creative, and inspired even when events turn out differently than expected. I also enjoyed reading this book because it serves as a gentle reminder on why it is essential and healing for the soul to make a connection with the higher self (spirit daily). I am glad to have a book like this to remind me of the importance of connecting with your own spirit. I have noticed in my own life that my own intuition and creativity have been increasing more and more each day as a result of my conscious intent to connect with my spirit (higher self, soul). The following is some of the helpful details that Sonia Choquette includes in "The Power of Your Spirit"

1) An innovative "Asking the Questions" journal idea that is on page 131.
2) There are tips for keeping your spirit burning strong (such as physical movement and meditation)(pg. 144)
3) There are certain questions to ask to assist in making the shift of increasing a personal connection with the spirit energy (higher self, soul) that is on page 89.

This book is a definite guide to add to a personal library for anyone who is aware and/or open to connecting their higher self (spirit, soul) and would like to have a guide to read and appy the ideas contained within for increasing a connection to the spirit (higher self, soul).

The work of living a Spirit filled life, how to do it, and the rewards that come as a result

"While we want to transform into spiritual beings, we fear the effort may be too complicated and the rewards not guaranteed. So we learn enough to talk about it, but stop short of experiencing it in the most direct way -- through a committed daily practice, because this is where "the rubber hits the road."

This, to me, is the foundation of this book - to get off our duffs and do the work. The book divides into four sections - awakening, discovering, surrendering, and flowing, Each section contains multiple stories with corresponding exercises and questions that are timeless.

Can you really create an authentic, Spirit-led life with daily practice? Sonia says it will take "attention, discipline, and practice." Lifestyle changes bring about real and lasting changes, not just isolated moments of the Divine. She encourages us to center our daily lives with meditation, breathing, and looking within with journaling. As a result, we can surrender to Spirit "even when your truth makes you or those around you uncomfortable, unhappy, angry, or afraid?" Yeah - not easy if you aren't use it to it right? Sonia does break it down in steps through this book.

I particularly appreciate the journal questions and breathing exercises. These are questions you could go back and use every few months to reconnect to your Spiritual vital signs. I kept wondering why she kept coming back to breathing and she did explain it! "As simplistic as it sounds, breathing is the only action that can interrupt and actually end the ego's game of fear and control. You can reset your personal vibration to a more creative, empowered, and joyful level."

Sonia explains that Spirit is "best felt in silence." This is an underscore of the important of moving from our head which wants to think and talk about spiritual things and moving into a much deeper place. She gives ideas on how to connect to our Spirit during the day as well as reminders to be open to intuitive thoughts and ideas. This really is such a wonderful how-to book that is great for beginners. I think the stories will help beginners because they will see themselves in her client stories. The journal and breathing exercises are wonderful for all because we can either forget the breathing techniques or it is time to ask the questions anew as we are move through stages of life.

Get out your tools! We are building an altar! To Sonia, the altar isn't about the exterior as it is about the interior. I loved the description that it's similar to walking into a holy place - your energy and Spirit just respond! What a beautiful space to create in your own home but "...if there's no holy inner work going on, though, the vibration of Spirit won't be present; and the portal won't open." I wanted to give Sonia a big HIGH FIVE when she mentioned "becoming disconnected when our altars were moved out of our homes and into the churches." I can't quote this entire chapter, but I would if I could. It's my favorite! It even includes things to do while at your altar to connect with your Spirit.

The ego urges us "to stay a step ahead of your fears." I've been so many decisions based on fear, trying to maintain the status quo, please others, or simply from fear of failure and having lack. That's a powerful sentence in this book. The daily practice and journaling sections in this book are so rich and plentiful I feel I've had a workshop with Sonia herself. This is absolutely a wonderful reference book that can be used at any time in one's life. The questions and ideas presented her for immediate use will never become outdated, in my opinion. The further I go in this book, the more I reap from it. She recommends making these habits for 40 days. This would be a *wonderful* book for a group study during Lent or any other time of year. It would be wonderful to have a place for encouragement in our new practices as our egos flare up and say we are too busy. I also think the questions could really trigger some emotional stuff for you. I would suggest using this book in a group, with a counselor, or a dear friend. I was surprised it wasn't suggested in the book - hence my 4 stars.

I appreciate how Sonia makes it clear through different stories that it is either ego or Spirit running every aspect of our life. As she simply states, "Unless we surrender, however, we cut ourselves off from our Divine power and burn out. Then we're left to rise from the ashes and find our way back to Source once again. In the end, there is no other place to go."

The final section of the book is Flowing with Your Spirit as opposed to "bullying" our way though life. "The greatest challenge to staying in flow comes when you encounter "the ebb, which is any change, expected or unexpected, that leaves you threatened and insecure because you aren't sure what coming next." Sonia says that ebbs are a "signal from our spirit to grow." This section lovingly reminds that it is our purpose to move through these ebbs to reach higher places in our Spirit. I hold to the thought Sonia shares, "To flow is to believe that the Universe is always conspiring for our success as spiritual beings,..." When in an ebb, it is okay to tell the Universe what we want, just leave it open how it will arrive! As we deal with our own ebb and flow, we are reminded to be compassionate and loving toward others. What a wonderful reminder as this book comes to a close.

This book prompted me to sit on my porch and watch the leaves fall and hear the birds sing, paint my garden steps purple, and weed my garden. All things that nurture me and calm me during my busy moments of the day. When my toddler was acting out, I felt this beautiful inner calm and didn't get rattled. This book will be referred back by me for years to come.

About the Author
Carlyn Montes De Oca is an author, speaker, acupuncturist, plant-based nutritional consultant, and animal advocate in private practice near San Francisco. She holds a bachelor's degree from Loyola Marymount University in Communication Arts and a master's degree in Traditional Chinese Medicine from Emperor's College. She is also certified in plant-based nutrition from the T. Colin Campbell Center for Nutritional Studies at Cornell University. Brimming with Useful Information for a Healthier Life

This book is so much more than I imagined. In addition to the inspirational stories about people and their beloved animals, the book is content-rich with studies and references supporting the many health benefits that humans reap by engaging with their animal companions. Each chapter offers practical prescriptions for healthier living and delightful illustrations that convey the writer's warmth and care. This has a "Chicken Soup for the Soul" feel to it, and will most certainly inform, entertain and captivate anyone who shares a love and reverence for animals, whether or not they are pet owners. I will definitely be getting more copies for the many animals lovers in my life.

Superb true crime

In December of 1978, Terry Sullivan was working as a state's attorney in Cook County, Illinois, just outside of Chicago. Lieutenant Joseph Kozenczak was commander of the Criminal Investigation Division of the nearby Des Plaines Police Department. And John Wayne Gacy was a thirty-six year old building contractor who had just lured away and killed a 15-year-old boy, Rob Piest. Over the next ten days, Kozenczak, Sullivan, and their teams of policeman and investigators would uncover Gacy's horrible crimes.
This is a remarkable book that sets the standard for true crime stories. More than just an insider, Sullivan played an active role in the Gacy investigation. Kozenczak, then a 16-year veteran of the DPPD, came to Sullivan and his assistants early in the investigation into Rob Piest's disappearance to seek advice on how to deal with Gacy, who was emerging as their prime suspect. Sullivan was thus a participant in the entire case, including Gacy's trial, and he presents a vast amount of information here in Killer Clown.
In this book, Sullivan (writing with Peter T. Maiken) paints the most comprehensive and accurate picture of Gacy that has ever emerged. It can be roughly divided into three parts: the investigation surrounding the disappearance of Rob Piest, the discovery of bodies on Gacy's property and the painstaking investigations into Gacy's past, and Gacy's trial and convictions for murder. For some, this book is "boring" because it spends too many pages discussing the police investigation. In fact, Sullivan actually does a service to true crime readers everywhere by detailing the interaction between a suspect and the police and how the investigation can be shaped by it.
And there is more than enough cruelty, sexual sadism, and lurid details in these pages for even the most seasoned true crime fan. Sullivan discusses the fates of many of Gacy's known victims -- how they were tortured before and during sex, how they were killed and how they were buried beneath Gacy's house, some in graves that they themselves had dug! In fact, after reading this book, one senses that Sullivan could only reveal so much in his writing without crossing the line into bad taste or sheer shock value; he himself writes that he begun to wonder "if there was any limit to [Gacy's] brutality."
A true story that reads like a novel, this book also has a huge cast of characters, from investigators to friends and neighbors to the victim's families. It's an exceptional account of an exceptionally evil man. I recommend it highly.

A "must-read" book for true crime followers

For anyone that follows true crime stories, "Killer Clown" is author Terry Sullivan's impeccably detailed and researched account of the John Wayne Gacy murders. Beginning with the seemingly meaningless piece of evidence (a photo receipt) that cast strong suspicion that Gacy may have had more to do with the disappearance of the victim that would be his final downfall to the ending of Gacy's innocence and freedom in the courtroom, this book should not be passed up. Sullivan does an outstanding job of researching the case that led police to the discovery of 28 young men that Gacy had molested and ultimately murdered, then buried in the crawlspace of his suburban Chicago home, as well as the discovery of 5 more bodies Gacy was responsible for. No clue is left alone and no stone was left unturned in Sullivan's mentally visual story. A truly frightening account, you feel as though you're right along with the police during their investigation of Gacy. It should be noted that this story can at times be gruesome in its revelations and depictions of the details of Gacy's deranged killing spree and may not be best suited for the sensitive reader. But after reading the book cover to cover, you almost feel like you were part of the investigation team that finally stopped Gacy's killing and eventually put him in prison which ultimately led to his execution. Immediately after being apprehended, in an apparent state of guilt and remorse, Gacy admitted to the killings, but shortly thereafter recanted on his confession and proclaimed his innocense all the way until his last day on earth. I spoke with Gacy several times before his execution and Gacy had so thoroughly convinced himself that he had never killed anyone, he believed the only crime he was guilty of was running a cemetary without a license. Gacy's take on the books and interviews and subsequent movie made about his case was that everything had been fabricated in an attempt to make him the scapegoat and to make the police and prosecutors look good. "Careers were made as a result of my conviction," Gacy once told me. Gacy's denial or not, Terry Sullivan and Peter T. Maiken's account of this true story is superbly written and conveyed to the reader and is a definate must read for any true crime buff.

Chilling, without shock value

I recently ordered a number of true crime books, mostly dealing with motive and serial killers for a study I'm doing. When I pulled this book out of the box, I was extremely disappointed. The front cover of Killer Clown is unnecessarily garish, bearing a closer resemblance to the National Enquirer than a solid, well written book (which it is). The back also proclaimed that there were "16 pages of shocking photos!" With one or two exceptions, they're hardly shocking, although I did pause over the one picture of a victim they chose to include. But that was more in sadness than in shock -- it was the face of an innocent, apparently happy young boy, and that spoke more strongly than any amount of gratuitous schlock could hope to.
This was a well thought out book, and kudos to Terry Sullivan and Peter Maiken for not drawing on the wealth of gore that came with Gacy's case. I agree with the other reviewers with regard to its methodical step-by-step review of the entire case, from his last murder to the handing down of the death sentence.
It's a shame, though, for I'm sure that some serious students of true crime may have passed on this book simply because of its packaging. If you're having similar qualms -- don't. This is a worthwhile read.

Like many of her fellow missionaries to China, Pearl Buck found that she was not immune to the influence of her adopted home. In this book Lian Xi tells the story of Buck and two other American missionaries to China in the early twentieth century who gradually came to question, and eventually reject, the evangelical basis of Protestant missions as they developed an appreciation for Chinese religions and culture. Lian Xi uses these stories as windows to understanding the development of a broad theological and cultural liberalism within American Protestant missions.

The rise of missions in nineteenth-century America was an overflow of America's religious and nationalist spirit. The development of liberalism in the mission field in the twentieth century, however, precipitated a major crisis within the American missionary enterprise. It also generated what Lian Xi calls a "reverse missionary impulse" as the liberal missionaries transmitted their own theological and cultural insights to their religious base at home. This development, he argues, became one of the chief ironies in the American Protestant efforts to penetrate and convert China. The untraditional, and often syncretic, religious and cultural views that emerged out of the missionaries' experience in the East enriched Protestant thought in America and contributed to the Modernist search for a broadened interpretation of Christianity.

The Whole World's in His Hands

Xi Lian's book is a well-written, well-researched, and fascinating account of the Protestant missionary movement in China 1902-1937. Reading it one sighs and thinks of the scramble since September 11, 2001 to learn about Islam. Geographical distance is no longer an excuse for ignorance of other cultures--and that applies to all protagonists. Xi writes of the gradual influence of China's culture and thought upon American Protestant missionaries, who came to China with ideals and good intentions but little knowledge; a substantial number,however, learned and returned to their own country with the "good news--gospel" that human spirituality is universal and the insights of the varying traditions are meant to be shared. God does not play favorites. When one reads of the ecumenical efforts among the Protestant missionaries in China in the 1920s one is astounded. That such efforts in the West had to begin all over again after WW II and the Second Council of the Vatican (1962-1965)is frustrating; we should be farther down the line.

The author is caustic at times, but always generous in his appraisals. To adopt the Chinese spirit of inclusion does not mean one's own beliefs will be diluted but that one's views and interpretations will be expanded.

The biographical accounts of three missionaries, Dr. Edward H. Hume,M.D., evangelist and then editor, Frank J. Rawlinson, and Pearl Buck illustrate the book's thesis: The good heart cannot be separate from a sound mind, but neither can the mind function to its fullest without sympathy.

This is a book worth reading!

About the Author
Andrew Webb is Professor of Radiology at the Leiden University Medical Center, and Director of the C. J. Gorter High Field Magnetic Resonance Imaging Center. He is a Senior Member of the IEEE, and a Fellow of the American Institute of Medical and Biological Engineering. His research involves many areas of high field magnetic resonance imaging and has resulted in more than 160 journal articles and five patents. He has taught medical imaging classes for both graduates and undergraduates both nationally and internationally for the past fifteen years.

Nadine Smith is a faculty member in the Bioengineering Department and the Graduate Program in Acoustics at Pennsylvania State University. She also holds a visiting faculty position at the Leiden University Medical Center. She is a Senior Member of the IEEE, and of the American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine where she is on both the Bioeffects and Technical Standards Committees. Her current research involves ultrasound transducer design, ultrasound imaging and therapeutic applications of ultrasound.

Great book for learning the basics of Medical Imaging

I bought this book for a senior level Electrical Engineering course in Biomedical Imaging at Michigan State University. The book does a very good job of covering the fundamentals of X-Ray, CT, MRI, Ultrasound and Nuclear Medicine. I actually read the entire book and have found it to be a valuable reference in learning the material. This books will be most helpful to those that have a solid background in math covered in an undergraduate engineering program, especially Fourier Transforms which are essential in these imaging techniques.
