How "they" short-circuit our better judgment

Douglas Rushkoff used to be a lot more hopeful that the rise of the Internet would free us from the "arms race" of manipulation and counter-manipulation to which we're subjected through the major media. He's changed his mind, in part because he found that his earlier work (notably the famous _Media Virus!_) was being taught in marketing classes to people who wanted to _create_ media viruses.
But he hasn't turned into a pessimist; he still thinks we can break the cycle, and this book is supposed to help us do it. And given his subject, he writes with a refreshing lack of paranoia: he's well aware that all of these techniques are (a) based on common features of "human nature" that ordinarily serve us just fine, and (b) used all the time, to some degree, by all of us. "We are all coercers," he says," and we are all coerced."
As you read the book, it will help to be aware of something Rushkoff doesn't actually get around to explaining until his closing chapter: by "coercion" he means the sort of "persuasion" that is intended to make it difficult or impossible for us to exercise our better judgment -- as distinguished from genuine, no-scare-quotes persuasion, which engages our reason rather than trying to short-circuit it. Bear that in mind if you think -- as I initially did -- that he's confusing coercion and persuasion.
What he's actually talking about is what people of approximately my generation would at one time have called a "mind-cop." (That term, by the way, has very nearly the same literal meaning as "geneivat da'at," or "stealing the mind" -- a term used in Jewish law for certain sorts of deception.) I assume no reader of this page will need me to explain that there's something ethically wrong with such practices, even though they fall short of physical force or the threat thereof. Indeed, by my lights, the sort of thing Rushkoff writes about, being a violation of the integrity of the mind, seems somehow _more_ wrong than the "initiation of force."
At any rate the subject should be of interest to a wide range of readers. I'll single out two kinds: (1) readers interested in the psychology of judgment and decision-making (and see Scott Plous's excellent book of that title for a good introduction), and (2) law students. (Yes, law students. It's relevant to all sorts of questions that arise in the study of the law: How are juries persuaded? When may a contract be rescinded? Why does the law protect stuff like "brand identities" and "public images"?)
Rushkoff's discussion covers a pretty wide range of methods, from advertising to PR, from "atmospherics" to pyramid schemes. One of his greatest strengths is his ability to draw parallels between, for example, CIA interrogation techniques and Nazi rallies, on the one hand, and sales techniques on the other, _without_ making you feel as though he's pushing a wild-eyed conspiracy theory. The narrative is also peppered with on-point personal anecdotes, and his passages on "cults" are downright spine-tingling. (And if you've ever felt a little funny about the popularity of Dale Carnegie's famous book, you'll like what Rushkoff has to say about it.)
Above all, don't make the mistake of dismissing Rushkoff as a "leftist" (as he says has happened to him). The political division between "right" and "left" is so malleable as to be almost meaningless. The relevant political division is between authoritarians/corporatists/statists and libertarians/populists, and Rushkoff is firmly in the anti-"authoritarian" camp. He's under no illusion that the government is going to Protect Us From All This; indeed some of his own examples demonstrate just the opposite. He's out to free us, not find a new way to enslave us.
Rushkoff's musings on the nature of "coercion" should also lead us to reflect on the nature of the "free market." According to libertarians (including me), the "free market" is simply the society that results when people respect each other's rights/integrity and engage one another only in voluntary relationships. But can a relationship based on "coercion," based on getting the other person to exercise something less than his or her best judgment, indeed based on anything less than full disclosure and fully informed consent, really be called voluntary?
If not, then the old Roman-law-based "caveat emptor" standard doesn't belong in the _real_ free market, and a very great deal of what we've been _told_ is the "free market" is really something else. A genuinely free market, in which all "exchanges" were truly informed and voluntary, would be communitarian rather than corporate-statist -- less, that is, like the military-industrial complex and more like a Grateful Dead concert ;-).
Anyway, Rushkoff's book is very nicely done, and bound to appeal to those of us who think we're skilled in the art of "crap detecting" -- a phrase I first encountered nearly thirty years ago in the brilliant _Teaching as a Subversive Activity_, by Neil Postman and Charles Weingartner. If you've read that book, or even if you just like the title, you'll like Rushkoff as well.

Dectructing the Media Ecology

If you've never read anything about the psychology and dynamics of persuasion or coercion, then this will book will open your eyes to this field. Rushkoff asserts that everything is coercive or persuasive in some manner. (Most people view the former as having a stronger connotation.) He deconstructs such areas as advertising, atmospherics (e.g., layout of a store), public relations, and the psychology of hand-to-hand coercion (e.g., mirror consumer's behavior = better rapport = more likely to buy).
Basically, Rushkoff provides numerous examples in each category of how individuals and organizations take advantage of the psychology of human beings. For example, we are more easily persuaded if we regress to when we were younger (and more susceptible to appeals to authority), transfer our feelings to an authority, or listen to certain music or smell certain smells (e.g., bake bread when trying to sell your home).
All told, this book will help the reader to better deconstruct the capitalistic environment that is built on persuasion or coercion of some sort. I also recommend the "Psychology of Persuasion" by Robert Cialdini. Read Neil Postman's "Amusing Ourselves to Death" for a trenchant analysis of the rise of television (and its iatrogenic effects).

Excellent Introduction To Coercive Mindwars

Rushkoff's most solid and well-written book to date, an excellent introductory overview of the coercive tactics and techniques used by Internet e-commerce merchants, multi-level marketing personnel, car dealers, and the U.S. military (the 'appeal to a general and broad readership audience' hot-button).
Rushkoff offers insights from his own consulting career, revealing that issues aren't as simplistic or ideologically pure as is sometimes portrayed (the 'response to critics' and 'juicy inside gossip' hot-buttons).
The index and bibliography are well worth pursuing, including Philip Kotler's seminal 'atmospherics in shopping malls/casinos' work, Noam Chomsky's de-construction of thought control in 'democratic' societies, Peter Watson and Christopher Simpson's review of psychological warfare techniques used on domestic populations (car salespeople using CIA interrogation manuals to increase sales), or Robert Dilt's study of the neurological basis of NLP (the 'appeal to authority', 'appeal to power', and 'appeal to specialist, esoteric areas' hot-buttons).
In an escalating arms race, it's no longer just persuasion (Vance Packard) or influence (Robert B. Cialdini), but coercion. Buy a copy for yourself and one for your friends! (the 'if all else fails, make the buyer feel fearful' hot-button).

About the Author
Rhonda Atkinson, Ph.D., has an extensive background in reading and psychology, and a deep understanding of how people learn. She has applied this knowledge to a variety of content areas and learner needs, and is an expert in instructional design.

After earning her doctorate in curriculum and instruction from Louisiana State University, Dr. Atkinson went on to become a faculty member and administrator in post-secondary education programs in Louisiana, Missouri, and Florida. Along the way, she has created courses and workshops to meet different content and learner needs in online, face-to-face, and hybrid formats.

She has also developed educational materials for Northrop Grumman, the Institute for Healthcare Advancement, Novartis, the Public Broadcasting Corporation, the Louisiana Office of Elder Affairs, the Louisiana Office of Nutrition Education, and the Louisiana Department of Education.

Dr. Atkinson is the co-author of seven college textbooks in reading and learning strategies. What is assessed on the FTCE Elementary Education K–6 test?
The FTCE Elementary Education K–6 test is a subject area examination constructed to measure the knowledge and skills that an entry-level educator in Florida public schools must have. The test is a requirement for candidates seeking an Elementary Education K–6 certificate. Because it’s a computer-administered test, the FTCE Elementary Education K–6 test is available throughout the year at numerous locations across the state and at select locations nationally. What is the format of the FTCE Elementary Education K–6 test?
The test includes a total of 220 multiple-choice items. Your test may include questions that are being evaluated for future administrations. These items will not count toward your score and you won’t know which is which, so they aren’t worth worrying about. Your final scale score will be based only on the scorable items.

When should the test be taken?
Traditionally, teacher preparation programs determine when their candidates take the required tests for teacher certification. These programs will also clear you to take the examinations and make final recommendations for certification to the Florida Bureau of Educator Certification.

A candidate seeking K–6 certification may take the appropriate test at such time as his or her Educator Preparation Program (EPP) determines the candidate’s readiness to take the test, or upon successful completion of the EPP, whichever comes first. The EPP will determine readiness through benchmarks and structured assessments of the candidates’ progress throughout the preparation program.

Taking the appropriate FTCE examinations is a requirement to teach in Florida, so if you are planning on being an educator, you must take and pass these tests.

How do I register for the test?
To register for the FTCE Elementary Education K–6 test, you must create an account in the FTCE/FELE online registration system. Registration will then be available to you online, 24/7.

How should I prepare for the test?
It is never too early to start studying for the FTCE. The earlier you begin, the more time you will have to sharpen your skills. Do not procrastinate. Cramming is not an effective way to study, since it does not allow you the time needed to learn the test material. It is important for you to choose the time and place for studying that works best for you. Be consistent and use your time wisely. Work out a study routine and stick to it.

When you take REA’s diagnostic test and practice tests, simulate the conditions of the actual test as closely as possible. Turn your television and radio off, and go to a quiet place free from distraction. Read each question carefully, consider all answer choices, and pace yourself.

As you complete each test, review your score reports, study the diagnostic feedback, and thoroughly review the explanations to the questions you answered incorrectly. But don’t overdo it. Take one problem area at a time; review it until you are confident that you have mastered the material. Give extra attention to the areas giving you the most difficulty, as this will help build your score.

Its Okay

I bought this as a study guide. It is very thorough on the materials necessary. The online tests were very helpful to me in regards to setting me up with the proper format and terminology. I will be taking this exam soon and will update my review then. I've scored an 86% and higher on all of the practice tests, so we will see if this knowledge and studyguide has properly prepared me. There is not a Q&A section for this listing yet so I was unable to ask questions about how the content of this material matched the content of the actual exam. I will be sure to include this information on my updated review.

UPDATE:

I took my exam today. For the most part the exam was about applying what we know into scenarios that we would come across in the classroom.

With that being said. This book was little to no help in regards to the mathematical section of this exam. I highly suggest digging out your old text books for that subject.

It was good for the other three sections of the exam though and served well, though half of the information located in the practice tests was useless.

I would NOT recommend relying solely on this book to pass the test

This book has a lot of information but it is not what is on the test. NOr are any of the questions close to what is on the test. The book also has many typos. I gave it a 3 star rating because while I did learn many aspects of material needed, it truly does not match the test. I would NOT recommend relying solely on this book to pass the test.

Helped me learn terms needed to pass English sectiion.

I bought the book to retake the English/Reading portion of the exam. The rest of the test sections were similar to the material found on the GK exam. The book was good as reference material. There are several definitions and practice tests so you can become familiar with terminology and concepts. Please understand that the actual test is application of the material. The practice test will give you foundational knowledge, but the actual exam will require your critical thinking and logic.

About the Author

X. J. Kennedy , after graduation from Seton Hall and Columbia, became a journalist second class in the Navy (“Actually, I was pretty eighth class”). His poems, some published in the New Yorker, were first collected in Nude Descending a Staircase (1961). Since then he has written six more collections, several widely adopted literature and writing textbooks, and seventeen books for children, including two novels. He has taught at Michigan, North Carolina (Greensboro), California (Irvine), Wellesley, Tufts, and Leeds. Cited in Bartlett’s Familiar Quotations and reprinted in some 200 anthologies, his verse has brought him a Guggenheim fellowship, a Lamont Award, a Los Angeles Times Book Prize, an award from the American Academy and Institute of Arts and Letters, an Aiken-Taylor prize, the Robert Frost Medal of the Poetry Society of America, and the Award for Poetry for Children from the National Council of Teachers of English. He now lives in Lexington, Massachusetts, where he and his wife Dorothy have collaborated on four books and five children.

Dana Gioia is a poet, critic, and teacher. Born in Los Angeles of Italian and Mexican ancestry, he attended Stanford and Harvard before taking a detour into business. After years of writing and reading late in the evenings after work, he quit a corporate vice presidency to write. He has published four collections of poetry, Daily Horoscope (1986), The Gods of Winter (1991), Interrogations at Noon (2001), which won the American Book Award, and Pity the Beautiful (2012); and three critical volumes, including Can Poetry Matter? (1992), an influential study of poetry’s place in contemporary America. Gioia has taught at Johns Hopkins, Sarah Lawrence, Wesleyan (Connecticut), Mercer, and Colorado College. From 2003-2009 he served as the Chairman of the National Endowments for the Arts. At the NEA he created the largest literary programs in federal history, including Shakespeare in American Communities and Poetry Out Loud, the national high school poetry recitation contest. He also led the campaign to restore active literary reading by creating The Big Read, which helped reverse a quarter century of decline in U.S. reading. He is currently the Judge Widney Professor of Poetry and Public Culture at the University of Southern California.

From a Homeschooling Perspective

I have been searching for a thorough introduction to literary analysis, and I've found it. Even though this is a college level text, it also works well for advanced homeschoolers. With 1000 pages, the author has plenty of room to introduce and discuss various literary terms, give examples, analyze the suggested readings, create correlations, and offer further critical thinking questions. (There is an instructor manual, however, it is very hard to get a hold of due to stringent safeguards against student cheating. I have the manual, but I found Sparknotes to be equally helpful for those times I wasn't sure what answer the author was looking for.) There is a take-away summary at the end of each chapter. In addition, the text is geared to taking what you've learned one step further and applying it to your own writing - whether fiction, or in essays. The last few chapters are devoted to how to write a proper essay.

Even though this is a college level text, I was pleased to find that most (not all) selections are appropriate for younger students. There is limited cursing, and limited sexuality (usually fade-to-black). Though XJK obviously has his favorite authors, there is a wide range of pieces from all time periods and styles, both classics and lesser known stories and authors. My only complaint is the inclusion of a number of complete plays - I would have preferred excerpts or suggestions for reading, and saved the page space (almost 1/3 of the book). I would also like to see more suggestions offered for novel-length stories related to each concept.

The pages are thin, however, a careful reader will find they are sturdy enough. With care, this book should last well.

Love the stories

I love literature and love this book. You get a little bio on each author prior to reading the passage. I love the insight and the ability to get in the mind frame and try to imagine what the author was going through, living in and experiencing when they wrote the magnificent stories that are in this book. I love reading and often read additional stories just for enjoyment. I am a huge fam of literature and this was a great book for my English II teacher to use.

so far this is the cheapest text book I've ever bought, my teacher allowed for a prior edition and I ordere used and paid only a couple bucks for this. I love when I save money on school books!! If you have not discovered the secret of used text books or renting them by the semester on Amazon, then you are missing out. I wish I had discovered it sooner I could have saved 100's of dollars on my school books over the last 2 yrs. I originally came to Amazon to check on reselling my books, and they not only have the best buy back rates of all the other buy back sites (although you won't get cash, just a gift certificate) but you can rent and buy used here as well. Since discovering all this I have become an Amazon Prime student member and bought a kindle Fire. I do my shopping here, and stream videos as well as get my school books.

Another Great Installment in a Fantastic Series

I think 4 stars?

I've been looking forward to this book for over a year. Both The Naturals and Killer Instinct were freaking amazing and basically flawless, and they made The Naturals series one of my favorites. So to say that I was excited for this third installment is a major understatement. This. Series. It's that good. But with all the goodness comes serious expectations, and if you're a reader, then you know that expectations and hype for a book can be rocky territory. So let's talk about All In.

(Here there be spoilers for the first two books.) All In picks up some time after Killer Instinct left off: the Naturals have been through another tough case, they're no longer working on just cold cases (though they're still kind of a secret), and, most importantly, my ship has sailed and Cassie and Dean are together. (Sorry not sorry, Michael. But I SHIP IT.) Wheels are up and the Naturals head off on a plane (see, this is so a YA version of Criminal Minds--but better) toward the city of sin. Classy Las Vegas casinos and hotels are being terrorized by a killer with a rather indiscernible pattern, and it has the Naturals working hard--and, of course, doing some foolery--to try to find the killer before he or she strikes. Add in some drama and personal problems for a number of the Naturals, and you've got a lot of sh*t going down in one crazy city.

One of the things about this series that works so well (and Barnes's The Fixer, for that matter) is a number of things, actually, but for now I'm going to talk about the characters. The Naturals each have distinct personalities that play into their natural talents (and penchants for being able to solve crimes) and create characters who just pop off the page. You've got Cassie--our protagonist--a profiler who lost her mom to a gruesome murder. Dean's a profiler too, but his dad is a serial killer, and a very big and bad one at that. Cassie and Dean both excel at picturing themselves as the killer, putting themselves in that head space. (I ship them SO HARD and I need Cassie and Dean to be together forever and more kissing pleaseee.) Michael's the rich kid with an abusive father, and he can read emotions with the blink of an eye--seriously, he can look at you and know exactly what you're thinking. Lia's the human lie detector, and that makes her an excellent liar. I'd be careful around her and Michael--they're the best troublemakers. And lastly is Sloane, who's a mix between Reid's brain and Garcia's computer skills. We don't know much about her past or Lia's, but maaaybe we learn more in this book. But THE CHARACTERS. A+++. Love them.

Now, there are two other things Jennifer Lynn Barnes does extremely well. Firstly, she can write. I read Raised by Wolves years ago and can't really compare it to her newer works, but I've noticed that Barnes clearly knows what she's doing. Remember what I said about The Naturals and Killer Instinct at the beginning of this review? Basically flawless. And I wasn't kidding. The other thing Barnes does extremely well is create a story. She figures out a killer(s) and plans a murder and knows all the steps and everything. I may think I found a hole, but then on the next page she fills that hole. (There was one instance where I wondered why they didn't just bring Lia in, but whatever.) And I thought I guessed the killer for once. I usually cannot because Barnes is that good. But of course, I WAS WRONG. I don't know how Barnes does it. She puts it all in. But she has these stories down to an art, and I need at least five million of them. At least.

But with all this fantastic amazingness and perfection going around, there's bound to be a letdown somewhere. Maybe it's just me, or maybe it's the hype and expectations I had for this book--seriously, I love this series, and I have been WAITING for this book--but I didn't feel this book quite like I did the others. And it pains me to say that. My gosh, it pains me. Perhaps part of it was the story--I was waiting for that bang (which I eventually got, I think), and parts would be figured out but I didn't understand what was going on. Something just wasn't there, and it so totally kills me. Don't worry--I definitely liked this book. I'd give it at least four stars. But I just think that something was missing and waaaaaahhh.

If you haven't read this series, then I don't even know how to tell you that you are missing out. It is pure greatness. Sure, it can be gruesome and bloody and creepy, but it's also got excellent character dynamics and twists and turns that are sure to have you twisting and turning as you read on to see how the hell the story will end. (Because it has to end well...right?) SPEAKING OF WHICH. All In was very hard to put down. Like, very hard. I was up late reading the day I got it (I had to start late, poo), and then I stupidly fell asleep, and when I woke up I picked it up and read until I finished. These books are very unputdownable and will keep you up late reading, and I love that. Also, that ending. WHAT THE HELL. I'm pretty sure giving us that kind of information and then ending the book and making us wait a YEAR to find out what happens next is illegal. In fact, I'm positive. But honestly, I need book four right freaking now. And I know that there at least four books in this series, but at least four isn't enough. Do you see how many seasons and episodes there are of Criminal Minds? You have a lot of catching up to do, Jennifer Lynn Barnes. (But no character changes because no.)

Amazing! When does the next one come out?!?!

Omg! This book continued the series with heartbreaking secrets and revelations about each of the characters. We see as they face difficult times and yet turn to each other instead of away. We hear more about the old cases and every lose end that you could have been wondering about. We meet some new characters and watch as Sloane, Michael, Lia, Dean, Judd, Briggs, and Sterling go through their own personal he** and still manage to save someone. We see some more of each if their weaknesses and see Michael and Sloane break in their own ways. We see a more mature side to Lia and the real Sadie. We see Dean try to protect them and Judd also even while they face their own difficulties. I cannot wait for the next one. I have been hooked on this series from the very beginning and this hasn't stopped yet. The writing keeps me on the edge of my seat, making predictions, and wondering. I can feel what the characters feel and I love your writing style. I would read this series a million times if I could have the same mystery again, I wish time travel was real so I could read it for the first time over and over again.

Another fantastic addition to the series. What starts out as a new case becomes more and more entangles with the past of some of our characters. Loved finding out more about Sloane's back story. So many big revelations. What a twist at the end. Why does this author keep doing this to me? I want the next book NOW!
