Better than nothing; usually better than Chilton

This book is really good if you want to know specifications and tuneup info. If you want to know how to disassemble the dash so you can replace your heater core, forget it because each year and model is different. They just don't get into that. The Haynes manuals are good for common things on all the models, like engine, brakes, shocks, oil filter location, etc. I am surprised that every now and then they actually have better diagram details than the factory Honda manual. Also rather strange is that they spend time on how to repair dents with body filler; this is NOT a body shop book!

The problem with these books is that they cover many years and models and sometimes the authors just plain blow it. So they give you just enough rope to hang yourself with! In the case of the CVCC engine, they completely ignore the procedure for removing the auxiliary valves from the head, which is involved and requires special tools. They said to use a valve spring compressor, which is what you would use to disassemble it AFTER you have removed it from the head! I have the factory service manual as well, so it is easy to compare. The problems with the Haynes book led me to invest in the factory Honda service manual!

Definitely worth reading to improve your relationship with your spouse.

It is definitely a good book for couples and it has improved my relationship with my wife. If nothing else it shows you what things your partner is really looking for out of their spouse. I quickly found that my love language was "Acts of Service". Though it might not be sexy or macho to say that, it means more to me to have the dishes and laundry done when I come home after work or have minor home improvements taken care of before I get home. My wife and I have 2 small children and our house is hard to stay clean because every room feels like a mess. We do clean it all the time but it feels like a losing battle. My wife's love language is "Words of Affirmation". As you can tell from all these Amazon reviews I am much more of a writer than I am a talker. My wife is always looking for me to say how much I love and appreciate her because I don't say it often enough.

A big part of improving your relationship with your spouse or boyfriend/girlfriend is to sticking with a date night to make sure you have quality time together. Especially if you have children or a high stress occupation. My wife and I have been together for 10 years and got stuck in the rut of an endless routine of doing everything we could for our kids, followed by daily chores and left little time for ourselves. Committing to 1 date night a week has really helped our relationship and improved our communication.

I recommend the book for sure and found it inspiring and worth reading. All couples can benefit from reading this book. The only downside is I wish it could have been a little longer. The stories from the author are interesting and I would have liked to have heard a bunch of his other examples of couples that he has dealt with. It was a short book and my wife and I finished it in 4 or 5 days and that was reading it slowly. The price is easily affordable. I found it best to photo copy the test quiz at the end instead of writing in the book so we can give the book to any family or friends who are struggling with their relationship.

The Five Love Languages

I originally stumbled upon the concept of the five love languages when I read The 5 Love Languages for Singles. As I read, I experienced a eureka moment. I was used to seeing love only through the lens of my primary love language, but all of a sudden I realized that others were saying I love you... even shouting it... even when I was oblivious to it. I decided to turn to this book now that I am married and wasn't disappointed.

I found the book to be well-written and an easy read, although there were parts of it that were somewhat redundant... especially toward the end. This is the kind of book that the more you put into it, the more you get. Chapman includes exercises at the end of every chapter to help you put into practice the ideas presented. There are also a number of practical tips strewn throughout the text. I found these tips particularly helpful as my spouse's primary love language is foreign to me.

If you're not familiar with the concept of the five love languages, you owe it to yourself to check out one of Chapman's books. It will transform your relationships with anyone who is important to you... spouse, children, friends, family, co-workers, whomever.

I truly believe everyone could benefit from reading this book, even if you aren't in a relationship! I have learned so much about myself and it has made my relationship so much stronger, I wish I would have bought it sooner. Gary writes in a way that grabs your interest and is so relatable, I would love to read more books by him. Do yourself a favor and give it a shot!

Now you can make bacon at home

This is the book I’ve needed all along. If you are a homesteader raising your own quality meat, poultry, fish, or cheese this is the book you’ve been waiting for. If you have a local source for healthy meat, you’re a hunter or fisher, or you love to play in the kitchen with unusual techniques you’ll love this book. If you prefer Hamburger Helper™ and Shake ‘n’ Bake™ you might feel a bit overwhelmed with the recipes, but hey, everyone has to start somewhere.

One of the drawbacks of cultured meat is that it is always pork based. Take a walk through the sausage and deli meat section of your local organic food store and read the labels. I did that last Friday at Choices Market in Kelowna. The first ingredient of every package I picked up – Pork. Now for those of you that raise pigs and love pork, that’s all fine. This book has lots of pork recipes. But my family doesn’t eat pork. Never has, except for a brief bacon fixation when my middle son was 15 till he left home. Once he left, so did the bacon.

So when I see those amazing Pinterest recipes of asparagus wrapped in bacon, I pin them anyway, knowing I’d never be able to actually make them. Isn’t that what Pinterest is for? Well, with this book by Stephen Lamb, that’s about to change.

You can now make bacon at home

Lamb reveals the secret to making bacon at home in just 10 days, using pork, (yes, but why would you have to use pork?). Once you know the step by step process, you can use the knowledge to substitute other meats, like lamb, goat, bear, or even beef. Beef bacon? Well, they sell turkey bacon here. See pages 138 to 143 for the well-illustrated beginner recipe that uses pork belly. There are recipes here for Canadian back bacon, too, using pork loin. Lamb claims this will be the best bacon you’ve ever tasted. It’s a very simple recipe with only a 6 ingredients. It’s the technique that’s magical. Once you’ve tried it, I’m sure you’ll never go back to store bought bacon with its high-end luxury price tag. Seriously, bacon’s gone up 25% here in just 3 months. Time to make your own, isn’t it?

But it’s not just about bacon. The book covers so many different meats, many that you may be growing on your homestead like lamb, goat, venison, duck, chicken, turkey, and fish. While the recipes are meat specific and traditional, the techniques of curing and smoking are timeless and used to preserve the meat you have on hand, whatever that may be.

What’s inside the book?
Let’s take a look inside the book. It is a small hardback that’s easy to handle – really the perfect size for a recipe book you’ll keep in the kitchen for a long time. Those large, unwieldy cookbooks with the hero pictures on alternate pages make inspiring reading but they are impractical to actually use on the counter while you are grabbing salt and molasses, and splashing olive oil. The layout is attractive with lots of information to insure your success and inspiration. There’s a few key pictures that demonstrate the step by step process of each technique, plus pictures of the finished products.
There’s traditional recipes for food you’d find at the local deli, plus innovative recipes that will inspire your creativity.

What’s not in the book?
What you won’t find in the book is complete menus and serving suggestions. This is a technique book that shows you how to create an ingredient from scratch like bacon (p. 138) or salami (p. 166), using traditional recipes that are adapted to the homestead kitchen. Excellent for reference!

The River Cottage Curing and Smoking Handbook by Steven Lamb is perfect for those wanting to get a better understanding of how to preserve meat at home without expensive equipment. The introduction by Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall gives us a look at the history of curing and smoking as well as traditional cured foods. I really enjoyed the "science behind curing" section, this helped me to get a better understanding of the "why" and "how" of the curing technique and how the main ingredients interact to flavor and preserve. There is also mention of botulism (a bacteria that becomes deadly by the toxins they emit) and how important of a role nitrites and nitrates play in preventing this by means of the curing process.

The author did a good job of keeping it simple, pretty much everything in the book can be done without expensive equipment. There is of course, things that will make the job easier like a meat grinder and sausage stuffer but you don't have to go out and buy them just to use the recipes in the book. The ingredients chapter gives us a look at meat, fat, herbs, spices, and casings. I enjoyed the pig diagram that listed the cut of pork, the product it makes, the method of curing to achieve it, and the page number for the recipe. For example, the picnic shoulder can be made into either salami, chorizo, or cotechino by fermentation or air drying and can be found on pages 167, 171, 175, respectively.

The chapter on methods is the most informative since you can take that knowledge and span it across many different foods. Dry curing, fermentation, brining, and smoking are all mentioned in quit in depth.

Lastly, the recipes are pretty amazing. The dry cured bacon is first on my list of things to try but so is the hot smoked rose-cured beef and the oak smoked cheddar.

Overall, excellent excellent reference book for anyone wanting to get a better understanding of the curing and smoking process!

Amazing awesome handbook that teaches you and informs you on ...

Amazing awesome handbook that teaches you and informs you on everything you need to know from smoking curing and doing so many other things. I really like how the beginning of the book goes over the history of curing and salting your meats to be able to get them to last longer. The book breaks down everything you need to know very well and it is an awesome read. Not only does it tell you the history behind curing your food it gives you step by step directions on how to cure salt and smoke many different types of meats. This is an awesome book and I love it. I have been trying to learn how to be more self sufficient and being able to do more things like this on my own and this book has really helped me accomplish that. It is a nice hard cover book that is very durable and a great addition to my collection. I received this book to share my honest thoughts and opinions about it.

Highly recommended for those who already know the Geez alphabet and looking to learn more

First of all, you need to already be familiar with the Geez alphabet. I spent about two months doing nothing but learning the alphabet before I went for this. You might need a longer or shorter time but for me that was enough to know the alphabet, or most of it, and be comfortable recognizing and sounding out the letters in words.

Once you're past that, you will find this book to be comprehensive and covering pretty much everything you need to begin learning the language. Don't feel like you need to go lesson by lesson or have to memorize everything at once, otherwise you will be overwhelmed especially since there is no transliteration of the Tigrinya words. Highly recommend to all who are serious about learning Tigrinya.

Good, but could be great with a few changes

This is a good book for learning Tigrinya for English speakers. However it has some things that could have been worked out better. First, as some other reviewers pointed out, the Ge'ez script and pronunciation of Tigrinya could have been worked out better. Tigrinya, being a language just like Amharic, has a complex writing system, and is not always pronounced exactly like it is written. Therefore a more careful handling of this would have been appreciated. It also doesn't help that from lesson 1 you have no transliteration to help you pronounce words.

Secondly, it is a good idea to get a dictionary if you want to use this book, because it does not give ANY vocabulary in any of the lessons. And even more so, it does not even have a glossary in the back of the book to reference! This is extremely frustrating because to learn any language well enough to use it you have to learn vocabulary.

However I will say that is a good grammar of Tigrinya. But I would steer potential buyers to other books instead, especially if you can't get a Tigrinya dictionary, which at least for ones in English can be quite hard. If you want to still learn a Ethiopic language, but don't have your heart set on learning Tigrinya I would suggest Amharic, which has a few good textbooks and dictionaries.

An essential purchase for anyone learning Tigrigna.

I wish that I had found this book five years ago, when I first started learning the Tigrigna language. I heartily endorse this book for anyone learning Tigrigna. I've shown this book to people who's primary language is Tigrigna, and they've asked me to order them copies to give to their children. This could be a problem, as 90% of the book is written at the college English level. The author gives many Latin and some German examples. Still, I urge anyone, who is struggling to learn to speak the Tigrigna language, to buy this book.

The author has attended every reunion of the 509th Composite Group since 1994. In 2004, he created a full-scale exact replica of the Little Boy atomic bomb for permanent display at the Historic Wendover, Utah Airfield Museum. Before final delivery to Wendover, it was signed by all of the surviving members of the 509th at their 2004 reunion in Wichita. This book was used by Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) author Dr. Robert S. Norris as the primary source for information on both bombs in his monumental "Racing For The Bomb" biography of General Groves published in 2002. Excerpts from the book pertaining to the Little Boy safing and arming plugs were used by the Defense (Exhibit K) in the famous case of the United States vs. Butterfields Auctioneers (Case No. 02-2776) and were instrumental in U.S. District Court Judge Susan Illston's 6/14/2002 decision to reject the government's claim to the plugs. The book was used by Japanese author Kiyoshi Souwa for his 2003 book "Hiroshima Atomic Bombing, The Meaning To Drop It At 8:15 A.M." and by English author Stephen Walker for his 2005 book "Shockwave." The book was also used as the main source for artist Jim Sanborn's 2003 "Critical Assembly" exhibit at the Corcoran Gallery in DC. The book is in the technical libraries at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL), Aldermaston in England, and the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum library. People at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL), Sandia National Laboratory (SNL), ORNL, LLNL, Argonne National Laboratory (ANL), Hanford, DOE, Fermilab, IAEA, Naval Post Graduate School, NRDC, Georgetown University, Harvard, Princeton, and Stanford have all bought copies. He serves as advisor to the National Atomic Museum and The Children of the Manhattan Project Preservation Association.

The author worked with the BBC, which produced a documentary pertaining to the bombs and used his book as source material. The "Tech Effects" program "Hiroshima" also appears on the History Channel and the author is listed in the credits. He has been interviewed by ABC News, National Public Radio in Vienna, Austria, NHK TV Tokyo, Hiroshima Chogoku Shimbun, and The Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists. He gave a presentation at a Manhattan Project Symposium in New York on 6/26/04 and on 8/14/04, along with General Paul Tibbets, at the Wright-Patterson USAF Museum in Ohio. On April 6, 2005, he met with the Hiroshima World Peace Mission delegation at Wendover where they inspected the areas where the original test atomic bombs were assembled and uncovered the fragmentary remains of the grounded copper-covered floor used in the Fat Man test unit final assembly building. In August 2005, he was honored to accept an invitation by the government of Tinian to give a series of presentations on the 60th anniversary of the dropping of the atomic bombs on Japan to an audience of both US and Japanese veterans. About the Author
The author is a married 59-year-old father of three. His physics teacher in school worked at the University of Chicago Metallurgical Laboratory during WWII as part of the Manhattan Project. He was a professional corporate and advertising photographer for almost 30 years, including three years as Chief Photographer for the Trane Air Conditioning Company and spent ten years in charge of an advertising photography studio in Milwaukee. He received numerous state and national awards, including a Graphic Design USA DESI Award, and served on the editorial board of Industrial Photography magazine, the Board of Directors of the Chicago Chapter of the ASMP (American Society of Magazine Photographers), and as Vice President of the APM (Advertising Photographers of Milwaukee). This is his first book.

The Missing Part of the Manhattan Project Story

"Atom Bombs: The Top Secret Inside Story of Little Boy and Fat Man" fills an important niche in the literature about the development of nuclear weapons. There is no shortage of books on the Manhattan Project, including such classics as "Now It Can Be Told," "Brighter Than A Thousand Suns" and "The Making of the Atomic Bomb." Biographies of scientists who worked on the project, including Robert Oppenheimer and Edward Teller, also abound. One would think that there would not be much fresh material to write about a project that, after all, took place more than 60 years ago. But new books on the subject continue to crop up. One of the latest, "Shockwave: Countdown to Hiroshima," released in 2005, details the last couple of weeks before the atomic bombings of the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki that ended World War II. In reading "Shockwave," I found that virtually all of the passages that referred to the technical details of the "Little Boy" and "Fat Man" bombs footnoted John Coster-Mullens' "Atom Bombs." So I had to buy it. It was an excellent decision.

According to a review in "The Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists," Coster-Mullen has not yet found a publisher willing to print his book, which is unfortunate--it deserves to be issued in bound hardcover form. Hopefully someday it will be. Now, what you get is a spiral-bound 8-1/2x11-inch, 402-page book with nice thick card-stock covers. Although it is printed on a laser printer, the printing quality is very good, and the photos and drawings are clear, sharp and crisp. My order, shipped directly from the author in Wisconsin, showed up very quickly and in perfect condition in a large padded envelope.

Enough about the appearance--what about the content? Quite simply, there is NO better source of information on the technical details of the world's first two nuclear weapons. In the first 88 pages, after touching on the history of the Manhattan Project and the "Silverplate" Boeing B-29 "Superfortress" bombers that were specially modified to carry the weapons, Coster-Mullen describes the design, configuration, materials and assembly procedures of "Little Boy" and "Fat Man" to an unprecedented level of detail. But wait, there's more! The bulk of "Atom Bombs" is made up of appendices containing hundreds of pages of photos, drawings, sketches, patent applications and declassified source documents that reveal nearly every detail about the design, development, construction and testing of "Little Boy" and "Fat Man" that you could ever want to know. This is really "nuts and bolts" stuff, literally. Finally, there are over 30 pages of endnotes, which themselves constitute a unique and valuable resource. You'll know more when you finish reading "Atom Bombs" than you can learn from all of the other books on the subject combined. It gets my highest possible recommendation.

The quest to replicate the first A-bombs

The December 15, 2008 issue of New Yorker contains a lengthy and fascinating story about the author of this book. "Atomic John: A truck driver uncovers secrets about the first nuclear bombs" by David Samuels, is every bit as engrossing as the book itself. Having read the book before the magazine article I had assumed that the author was a scientist of world renown, not the over-the-road truck driver who has devoted much of his life researching the subject, writing, and even printing the book and mailing it to the purchasers from his home in Waukesha, Wisconsin. The New Yorker article should be included as an addendum to the book.

This book passes muster & then some...

After reading a fascinating article in the New Yorker about the author and his passion for atom bomb research, I gave this book as a Christmas gift to a hard to please engineer friend who has a 20+ year interest in the subject matter. His typical criticism about a-bomb books is that they are sugar-coated not technical enough. I'm happy to report that this one gets two thumbs up across the board. Mr. Coster-Mullen has obviously put together a well-researched, serious document. His dedication and hard work shine!
