Penguin Atlas of World History

This two book set is the same as the old Anchor Atlas of World History though volume 2 has been updated to bring the set more or less to the present. I fell in love with the Anchor Atlas set to the point I wore out my first set so I bought a second set. Then the publisher took the book out of print. It stayed that way until the last couple of years when Penguin took over.

These atlases are perhaps the most comprehensive of any similar books on the market. One or two come close, but I think Penguin's atlas is still the best if you are looking for a brief overview. Critics say the print is too small or the content is not detailedenough. I disagree with both criticisms. I believe a historical atlas should be brief. The intent is to cover an event and depict it in maps. If in depth analysis is wanted, then find a book dedicated to the particular topic.

I bring these books with me whenever I travel and want something to read. In fact, back in high school we had a group assignment of what books we would bring along if we were to be stranded on a desert island. I convinced my group these books were worthy of such a list. With them back in print I can finally discard my first set (the glue binding disintegrated leaving me with single pages. I bought this set to the cabin for casual reading up there. Now I can bring my first replacement set up there.

I just can't say enough good things about these books. I did notice a flaw in a map label in volume 2 that has not been corrected since the initial publication. In a map showing the early United States they label as "Minnesota Territory" those lands which were originally the Wisconsin Territory after Michigan gained statehood. This flaw leads me to wonder about other maps whose labels I'm not as well versed it. But overall I still remain very impressed with this set. Anyone who buys this set for what it is: an introduction to the topics it presents accompanied by detailed maps, will not be disappointed.

This and Volume II are reprints of the old Anchor Atlas of World History. I received that edition as a birthday present when I was 10, and it played a huge role in the development of my passion for history. Leaving through the pages year after year wore the old edition out for day to day use(it is still faithfully preserved!), and I was happy to replace it with the reprint.

For the size, portability, and cost, you cannot do any better than this. Yes, the print is tiny, and much of it is basically written in shorthand My dad read through it back in the day and wondered who "Gks" were (the Greeks). The maps are detailed, but stylized, and can definitely use geographic terms in somewhat misleading or cryptic ways.

The book isn't Euro-centric: it's German centric. I suppose this makes sense as, if I recall, it was originally published as a supplement to a German history TV documentary aired in the late 60s. But the upshot is that you *will* know everything you never wanted to know about the Ottonians, the Invesititure crisis, the Hohenstaufens, the Interregnum, the House of Luxemburg, etc. etc.: Germany gets five maps with the same number of pages of text for the High Middle Ages (900-1200) alone. East Asia gets its history from about 200 to 1200 squished into a page. But overall, it is still an excellent reference, with useful dynastic family trees, schematic diagrams, and very detailed overviews of world history topics. The sections on ancient history are simply great as a reference. It is indispensable for the historian.

Pound for pound the best there is...no contest

I have loved maps and history for longer than I care to admit and I was fortunate enough to have a father who shared these interests and provided a fertile and far-ranging "garden" of books for my edification and enjoyment growing up. One of my favorites was this book. The story skips ahead many years--I decided to look for this book, which had been out of print or at least unavailable for a long time. I found it here on Amazon and ordered it, along with another larger highly touted atlas from another publisher (rated #1 by another reviewer). Much to my delight and surprise, the Penguin atlas has aged quite well (to be expected given the period covered). Its strength lies in the abundance and thoroughness of the map coverage--where other atlases give one map, this one often gives three or more--and in the "extracurricular" material such as diagrams illustrating governmental organization. Incidentally, I was sorely disappointed in the other atlas, which cost far more and sported foolish and uninformative cartographic projections as well as such vast lacunae in coverage as to render it virtually worthless as a serious reference.

As I see it, the heart of any atlas worth its salt must be its maps and this compact, user-friendly little volume offers such a wealth of these that it exposes other historical atlases as the patchy, inadequate waste of paper most of them are. I don't buy an atlas for text--though this atlas has excellent if necessarily skeletal narrative accompaniment--I buy it for the maps, to complement my reading. There's nothing sillier than an "atlas" that overdoes it on the text at the expense of the maps; oddly enough, Penguin also publishes some of what I consider the worst atlases available today (see their atlas of the Roman Empire for a prime example)--go figure.

Really this atlas does everything right. My sole complaint is the small size, but this could just as easily be considered a plus (for portability, ease of use, etc.); if only there were a large format historical atlas to match--I'm still looking for a worthy counterpart.

Great little book. Great for gestures

It is a small book for experienced developers. In my particular case, it is a great addition to my library. The first four chapters are still some what considered basic in my opinion but very useful. Especially if you haven't ever use the Kinect. Note that the book is all based in C# and WPF. While it is ok, I'm just a C++ Lover, so I wish everything was in C++.
The real meat of the book starts in Chapter 5 in terms of gestures and postures.

How do I do multiple players? That's the one material I did not see covered but this is more then likely going to be covered in a new book. Overall, great book! I recommend for anyone looking for learning the basic of Kinect. It goes through everything in a detailed manner such as gestures and such.

Detailed historical book!

If you are looking for straight history of Islam in the Bengal area, this book will definitely not let you down. It is very detail oreintated, as the author uses primary and secondary source material. Most of it is pretty dry, but if your a history lover, you will devour it up.

Dense Reading; engaging for scholars

Recommended for experts, not for general overview. As an academic book, this will be received better by scholars than by a popular audience. It is fairly dense, often dry, but well researched and fairly well argued. If you are interested primarily in Bangladesh and the roots of Islam there, then this specific focus will engage you. If you are interested in a more general review of Bangladesh history or Islamic culture, than you would be advised to look elsewhere. Eaton does a fairly good job looking at the arguments advanced for how Islam came to Bangladesh, and he suggests Islam was not brought all-at-once or by the sword, but by creative adaptation to, and in the process of developing the land.

Pretty exhaustive...

At first, I had thought Eaton will only cover the spread of Islam in the Bengal as a religious process but obviously 300+ pages isn't for all that. Not only does he start from the B.C. periods and provide an overview of the political, religious and agrarian developments in this part of the world but he also goes on to describe much of the politcal history of the Turkish invasion and later Mughal dynasty. Obviously, I realized that giving such a comprehensive background helps the reader form a broader picture of the frame of mind of the receivers of the Islamic faith at that time in Bengal and does a better job explaining exactly why Islam blossommed so rapidly there. Eaton expounds the already existing theories of mass conversion and then goes on to partially reject them. Then he carefully eloborates on his view (which I, being a Bangladeshi, find agreeable) on how Islam ACTUALLY spread in this region.

For those looking for a book on the spread of Islam around the world, go for The Spread of Islam by Thomas W. Arnold but this book by Eaton is much more micro in perspective and hence serves the purpose of exploring the conditions conducive to the spread of Islam more thoroughly, bearing in mind of course that what induced Bengali people to embrace Islam is not necessarily the same that encouraged people in other times and places to become Muslim.

As a professor of comparative literature, I own several books dealing with this very issue. When I got my Kindle, I said: "oh, what the Hell? Let's give this one a try". I am glad I bought it. It is very well researched, informative, well written and witty. It is clear a labour of love. A very good option for any lit student.
